In today's episode of "What's that?" we're exploring the idea of a "trade name" in the crystal industry. While some of these are a non-issue, many trade names are deceptive and only given to increase the perceived value of a mineral. I've seen a lot of videos asking how we as sellers are supposed to get away from trade names once a stone has become known as such in the crystal community, and I think educating collectors on the true names of minerals and committing to using mineral's true name first and then have a secondary reference to a trade name is the only way through this issue.

What collectors can do to make sure they aren't getting an over marketed piece is only buy from people who know where a mineral comes from, and educate yourself on where minerals are found in the world. It's hard to sell "blue onyx" from Pakistan when you know that high quality blue banded calcite usually called "blue onyx" is from Argentina.
