Alexandria, VA - The agreement must still be formally adopted by the IATTC and WCPFC before taking effect.

“Pacific bluefin tuna are an international fisheries success story,” said Larry Phillips, Pacific Fisheries Policy Director for the American Sportfishing Association and a member of the IATTC General Advisory Committee. “At its historic low, the stock was estimated at roughly 2 percent of its unfished spawning biomass. Today, spawning biomass is estimated at 23.2 percent of the unfished level and has increased rapidly since 2011. That recovery demonstrates what can be accomplished when nations work together, follow the science and make responsible management decisions.”

ASA applauds the U.S. delegation for recognizing the economic importance of recreational fishing and working to ensure the sector was appropriately considered throughout the negotiations.

The American Sportfishing Association welcomed an agreement reached this week by the Joint Working Group of the Inter American Tropical Tuna Commission and Western and Central Pacific Fisheries Commission to advance a long term management procedure for Pacific bluefin tuna.

For many in the fishing industry, ICAST is a whirlwind of meetings, product launches, handshakes, and more new tackle than anyone could reasonably absorb in a single week. But before the show floor officially opened in Orlando, Shimano and G. Loomis offered members of the media something a little different: an opportunity to see where a significant part of the fishing tackle supply chain begins, followed by an early look at some of the companies' most anticipated new products.

Hosted at Mud Hole Tackle and presented by Shimano, the pre-ICAST media event provided an interesting combination of industry insight, retail perspective, and new-product exposure. And it started with a tour of the Mud Hole facility.

For those familiar with Mud Hole primarily as a source for rod-building components and fishing tackle, seeing the operation from the inside offered a much better appreciation for the scale and scope of the business.

Shimano and G. Loomis kick off ICAST at Mud Hole Custom Tackle.

FOOTHILL RANCH, CA – Six decades. That's how long DAIWA has been putting technologically advanced tackle into anglers' hands. To mark the milestone, DAIWA is introducing a pair of 60th Anniversary Limited-Edition TATULA Bass Rods — a fitting companion to the brand's TATULA legacy in bass fishing.

The new TATULA 731MXS spinning rod and 731MHFB casting rod pair premium performance with commemorative styling built for the occasion. Sterling silver cosmetics and a special "US DAIWA 60 YEARS LIMITED" marking set these rods apart, but they're built to fish, not just to look good in the rack.

TATULA 731MHFB

SVF Carbon Construction

The blank on the 60th Anniversary Limited-Edition TATULA Bass Rods is built from DAIWA's high-density SVF (Super High-Volume Fiber) carbon, which packs more carbon fiber into the layup while cutting back on resin. Less resin means less dead weight, so the rod stays light in hand through a full day of casting and working baits.

60TH Anniversary Limited-Edition TATULA Bass Rods join DAIWA's milestone lineup.

Missouri fish biologist, Jeff Finley, penned a piece on paddlefish in the 2021 book, America’s Bountiful Waters. He put his heart on his sleeve, having handled a great many individual paddlefish through a long career, ranging in size from hammer handles to fish so big it took two people to wrangle. The man had a personal and professional connection to what is arguably the oddest fish in all of the United States.

Finley mused on how little was known about the second-largest freshwater fish in the United States, going well into the 20th century. They can reach 200 pounds and seven feet long. It was Charles Puckett with the Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) who in 1960 discovered how paddlefish spawn, albeit by happenstance.

According to Finley, Puckett “watched paddlefish converge and convulse in rapids over a gravel bar at the juncture of Weaubleau Creek .

Paddlefish and anglers benefit from Sport Fish Restoration funding.

FOOTHILL RANCH, CA – The dropshot category has built its stellar reputation on the backs of foundational profiles, classics like straight-tail worms, small minnows, and slender plastics that have caught bass across the globe for eons. These now timeless shapes have proven their worth by gliding and undulating, establishing the dropshot as standard operating equipment. But true progress happens when a category builds upon its rich heritage, evolving to offer fish a completely fresh dimensional look that commands their curiosity.

Dropshotting is reaching its next era. Anglers can now complement their traditional setups with a striking new profile crafted to maximize the presentation's potential.

North American bass anglers now have direct access to a highly specialized Japanese design philosophy with the arrival of the Flutter GIZMO.

DAIWA and Evergreen bring the masterfully tuned Flutter GIZMO 1.5" stateside to introduce a high-action creature and urchin hybrid to North American bass anglers.

Southeast States Submit Revised EFPs to Test State Management of Recreational Red Snapper

The states of Florida, Georgia and South Carolina have applied for exempted fishing permits (EFPs) to pilot state data collection and management strategies for red snapper. If approved, the EFPs would allow the recreational harvest of red snapper in state and Federal waters daily during October, with additional fishing days possible in December.

Earlier this year, NOAA granted EFPs to the South Atlantic states to test state-led data collection for recreational red snapper management in the South Atlantic. Hours before Florida’s season was set to begin, a federal judge issued a preliminary injunction, halting the season and causing significant economic harm to sportfishing businesses in the region.

Your weekly look at how ASA’s government affairs team is hard at work supporting sound fisheries policies throughout the country.
