So as an Educator, a Booksellers, and a Parent my take on banned books is....
Every book is written through someones personal lens or perception AND every book is written with an agenda. No matter how righteous or distasteful, every book is normalizing something. Now, regarding children reading banned books (or any book for that matter) it all depends on what values you want to reinforce with said children. Stories are meant to socialize children in a given value and cultural system. So as adults/caregivers we have to be clear about our values and our responsibility to honor and teach those values. With that being said, some banned books may not be for you or your children while others are exactly what aligns with your family's worldview. My own personal belief is that it's important to first teach your child(ren) about their family's value system and build a strong foundation around that. And just note, some books, shows, content, and philosophies will firmly contradict what your family values. This may be confusing for young children who may not yet have the foundation or capacity for philosophical debate/discourse.
I understand that in the spirit of diverse views we might want to expose children to every book as early as possible but there is a developmentally appropriate process to building and preparing children for that. It's best that they know and appreciate who they are and what their family values before opening the flood gates. I would love to know y'all's thoughts and how you have handled banned books in your home. Bless.
