The Meaning of the Christmas Tree🎄
Christmas 🎄 began to be celebrated in the Church ⛪ only in the 4th century.
For many centuries that followed, various plant decorations accompanied the feast, but there was no Christmas tree yet.
Its story begins much later.
According to historical research 📜, the custom of the Christmas tree appeared in Western Europe only at the end of the 15th century, in Alsace – the borderland of today’s France 🇫🇷 and Germany 🇩🇪. The oldest records mention churches in Strasbourg being decorated with fir trees 🌲 as early as 1492.
What is crucial, however, is why the tree appeared.
In the Middle Ages, so-called Paradise plays 🎭 were very popular – performances staged on December 24, telling the story of Adam and Eve. Their figures symbolized all of humanity awaiting the Savior.
In these plays, the tree of paradise had to appear – the tree whose fruit became the cause of humanity’s fall. Since apple trees were unavailable in winter, spruce or fir trees were used instead, decorated with red apples.
After the performances ended, the tree was first moved into churches, and later also into homes.
This is how the Christmas tree 🎄 was born.
Saint John Paul II 🙏 said:
“I think that this tree is a symbol of the tree of life, and of that tree which, together with Christ ✝️, has been planted anew in the soil of humanity.”
Humanity was cut off from the tree of life by sin.
With the coming of Christ ✝️, the tree of life is planted anew.
The Pope also pointed to something very concrete:
“There is a connection between the Christmas tree of Christmas Eve and the tree of the Cross of Good Friday. The Paschal Mystery…”
That is why Christmas trees shine:
“They symbolize life and light. Christ is life and light.”
The Christmas tree did not appear immediately with the first Christians.
But when it did appear, it carried a very specific message: from the tree in paradise, through Bethlehem, all the way to the Cross ✝️.
