In southern Illinois’s Hardin County, the Denton Mine became one of the best-known producers of fluorite in the Harris Creek area. Operated from 1979 to 1993, it yielded crystals with the strong color and clean cubic form that collectors associate with the Illinois-Kentucky Fluorspar District. ⛏️

The fluorite specimen pictured here shows why Denton material remains so admired: sharp faces, glassy luster, and rich hues. Some crystals display distinct color zoning, creating layered interiors when light passes through them.

Calcite commonly appears beside the fluorite, sometimes as pale or golden crystals, while barite may form flat, tabular blades. ✨ Denton specimens can also contain metallic galena, dark sphalerite, and brassy chalcopyrite.
