An Irish writer has been named on the longlist for the prestigious Booker Prize 2026 for his debut novel All Them Dogs.

The Booker Prize has been awarded to the best authors around the UK and Ireland for 55 years, and this year’s longlist has been whittled down to 13 books from 163 submissions.

All Them Dogs by author Djamel White follows the story of a young West Dublin gangster, Tony Ward, who returns to the capital following several years hiding in England where he fled after murdering a gang rival back home.

Ward is faced with the challenge of reinserting himself into the capital’s gangland scene which is much changed since his departure, though a romantic connection with an enforcer threatens to compromise his violent exploits in a hyper-masculine world.

Mr White is the youngest author on this year’s longlist at 28 years old and is an alumnus of University College Dublin where he obtained an MA in English and Creative Writing and an MFA in Creative Writing.

This year’s Booker Prize judging panel described Mr White’s novel as “a mouthy, ballsy and bracingly unsentimental portrait of West Dublin gangland, set well off the beaten track of the city’s usual literary landmarks”.

Mr White is up against stern competition in the hunt for the Booker Prize this year with former winners Marlon James, Elizabeth Strout and Douglas Stuart taking their rightful places in the chosen 13.
