The Washington Agate and Mineral Society, the stateโs oldest organized rock club, is hosting its 32nd Annual Rock, Gem, Fossil, and Mineral Show in conjunction with Teninoโs Oregon Trail Days celebration. The show is educational and fun for all ages. Who doesnโt like rocks? The show is a wonderful way to introduce your kids to science through geology. Admission to the show is free. It is located at the Tenino City Park in Cascadia Country on the ball fields near the Blue Pump Track. Twenty-eight vendors will be selling a wide variety of rocks, minerals, jewelry, beads, gems, crystals, fossils, and lapidary equipment for rock cutting and polishing. The club will have its beloved spinning wheel and door prize tickets for sale. Several demonstrators will be showcasing how to make stone arrowheads, knives, beads, and cabochons. There will also be demonstrations of rock polishing and sterling silver wire wrapping.

The best edutainment for families to share the experiences of what life was like for pioneers more than 100 years ago.
1. Apple Cider Making Demonstration: Learn the traditional process of pressing cider.
2. Axe Handle Making with a Drawknife: Visitors will use a drawknife to shave a limb until it turns into an axe handle.
3. Antler Jewelry: Visitors will cut antlers into pieces, drill holes in them, and thread string through to wear as a necklace.
4. Arrowhead Carving: Visitors will learn about arrowheads and have the opportunity to carve one out of wax.
5. Black Powder Shooting Experience: Step back in time and experience the sights, sounds, and smoke of the fi****ms that helped open the American frontier. Join us for a live black powder shooting demonstration featuring authentic flintlock and percussion rifles representative of those carried by trappers, mountain men, pioneers, and emigrants traveling the Oregon Trail. Watch these historic fi****ms come to life as we explain their operation, history, and role in westward expansion. Then, experience history for yourself! Under the guidance of experienced instructors, visitors will have the opportunity to safely fire a traditional black powder rifle and discover firsthand what shooting was like more than 175 years ago.
o What you'll learn: The differences between flintlock and percussion fi****ms; how these rifles were loaded and fired before modern cartridges; the role black powder fi****ms played in hunting, survival, and frontier life; and the challenges and skills required to use them.
o Offered Friday and Saturday, 1:00 p.m. - 4:00 p.m. Cost: $2 per shot.
6. Blacksmithing: Visitors have the chance to watch iron heat up in a forge and get shaped by pounding.
7. Candle Making: Visitors will dip strings into melted wax to make their own candle.
8. Cascadien Group: Interpreters dressed in period clothing will demonstrate daily life in the 1800s.
9. Cedar Post and Rail Making: Visitors are invited to drive wedges into a log until it splits to create rails and posts.
10. Cedar Shake Making: Visitors will drive a froe (shake axe) into a cedar block, pulling back on the handle to split off a shake.
11. Charcoal Drawing: Learn how to draw with different types of charcoal.
12. Corn Husk Dolls: Visitors have the opportunity to make small dolls out of corn husks.
13. Dutch Oven Cooking Demonstration: Visitors will sample a variety of treats cooked in a Dutch oven and learn about the process.
14. Dugout Canoe Making: Get hands-on experience learning how dugout canoes are crafted.
15. Hat Design: Learn how hats were historically designed and created.
16. Lashing Sticks: Visitors will learn how to use twine to lash together sticks or poles to build structures.
17. Log Cabin Notching: Visitors will place a log on a sawhorse, make two cuts, and use a mallet and wood chisel to carve out a notch.
18. Log Cutting with a Crosscut Saw: Two people will work together pulling a crosscut saw back and forth to cut a log on sawhorses.
19. Lumber Making with a Carpenter's Adze: Visitors learn how to flatten a log by straddling it and chipping away with an adze, moving backward until the log becomes flat lumber.
20. Old-Fashioned Toys: Visitors are invited to play with various toys common in the 1800s.
21. OHOP Pioneer Farm Activities: Visitors are invited to try out many different historic farm activities from the OHOP Valley near Eatonville.
22. Pitchwood Fire Starter: Visitors will learn the history of pitchwood, how it is harvested from old stumps, and how it is used to start a fire.
23. Primitives: Check out a mountain man rendezvous camp display.
24. Rope Making: Visitors can use a 100-year-old device to twist three strands of twine into a custom piece of rope to take home.
25. Sharpener Displays: Visitors can pedal a large, round grinding stone to see how axes and knives are sharpened.
26. Stone Carving: Learn how to use stone carving tools, hammers, and chisels.
27. Washing Clothes with a Scrub Board and Wringer: Wash clothes in a tub of soapy water, scrub them clean, rinse them, run them through a mechanical wringer, and hang them to dry.
28. Wood Carving/Whittling: Use a pocketknife to carve and whittle a stick into a custom walking stick.
29. Woodworking Station: Try out vintage carpentry tools, including hand drills, hammers, nail pullers, and hand planes.
30. Wood Carving: Use fine woodworking tools to create beautiful carvings out of pine boards.

After FIN participates in the Lions Club Grand Parade, she will head to the park. Fin the Migrating Salmon is a 25โ fiberglass sculpture of a summer chum salmon, with over 150 plants and animals painted on her interior walls that kids can climb into. This interactive exhibit is a fantastic, hands-on way to connect with Pacific Northwest ecology, learn about watershed health, and discover the importance of salmon conservation, while having a blast. Be sure to bring your camera for some great photo opportunities inside and outside of FIN. Special thanks to Kumquat Mercantile in Tenino for their assistance in bringing FIN to Tenino for you to enjoy.

Tenino Oregon Trail Days are coordinated and promoted annually by the Tenino Area Chamber of Commerce in partnership with the City of Tenino, Tenino Community Service Center, South Thurston County Historical Society, Tenino Lions Club, Washington Agate and Mineral Society, South Thurston Fire and EMS, Tenino Young-at-Heart Theatre, Tenino Farmers Market, 90 Ten Training Academy-Capital City 3on3, Briar Cottage Quilting Fabrics and Notions, Tenino #564 Fraternal Order of Eagles, Cornerstone Community Church, Tenino Timberland Library, Tenino Arts, Creekside Conservancy and Tenino VFW Post 5878.
