This property in Meadview may have ruined us for all future vacations. We were right in the thick of a Joshua tree forest, surrounded by those gloriously odd trees that look as though Mother Nature assembled them from spare parts and pure confidence. Each morning brought postcard worthy views in every direction, while the desert was so peaceful that spotting a rabbit sprinting past qualified as breaking news. At night, the stars put on a performance that made every city sky seem like it was operating on a limited budget. The setting was so perfect that we half expected the Joshua trees to start collecting a resort fee.

Driving from Los Angeles to Williams on U.S. Route 66, I stopped for gas, snacks, photos, and somehow still arrived wondering where all my money went.

Walking around Williams, Arizona with a camera is a dangerous activity for anyone with limited storage space. Every few steps along Route 66, another attraction demands a photo: towering neon signs, classic diners, vintage gas pumps, and souvenir shops bursting with road-trip nostalgia. I started out planning to take a few pictures and somehow ended up photographing nearly everything that wasn’t moving. Even the old cars parked along the street seemed determined to steal the spotlight. By the end of the day, my camera roll was packed, my legs were filing complaints, and I was convinced that half of Route 66 had personally auditioned for my photo collection.

Driving through Williams, Arizona on historic Route 66, you’ll spot one of the road’s quirkiest attractions: a giant cowboy standing beside an enormous cactus. The fun part of the story is that the cowboy wasn’t just built as a roadside decoration. Local businessman Marshall Noriega created the 13-foot-tall, nearly one-ton statue as a tribute to former Williams mayor John Moore, turning a simple idea into a supersized local landmark. Moving the cowboy from Noriega’s backyard to Route 66 was an adventure in itself, requiring a crane and a carefully padded trailer. Today, the towering cowboy and cactus have become a favorite photo stop, carrying on the Route 66 tradition that bigger is always better when it comes to roadside attractions.

In the sun-baked hills around Nelson Ghost Town, Tony had two hobbies that seemed perfectly reasonable to him and completely baffling to everyone else: collecting old trucks and admiring mountain scenery. The result was a yard that looked like a retirement village for rusty pickups, each one parked at what Tony insisted was the “best scenic overlook.” Visitors would ask whether he was restoring the trucks, and Tony would gesture grandly at the mountains and say, “They’re restoring me.” By sunset, he could spend an hour debating which had more character, a dented 1948 flatbed or the jagged ridgeline behind it. The trucks never moved, the mountains never changed, and somehow Tony still claimed the collection was “coming along nicely.”

In Nelson Ghost Town, Nevada, the dust doesn’t settle. It signs a lease. Every rusty truck, crooked shack, and sun-baked mining relic seems to be competing for the title of “Most Likely to Turn Into Sand.” The rust clings to old cars like they’re wearing orange tuxedos to a very late Wild West reunion, while the desert wind strolls through town rearranging dust with the confidence of an interior decorator. Somewhere near the old mining works, a pickup truck has probably been rusting so long it’s halfway through becoming a geological feature. Nelson’s history is full of gold miners, outlaws, and enough lawlessness to make a sheriff reconsider his career choice, but today the loudest troublemakers are dust and rust, locked in an endless duel to see which one can swallow the town first.

In Nelson, Nevada, the old trucks don’t look abandoned so much as retired celebrities. They sit scattered around the ghost town like a convention of rusty grandpas, each one silently insisting it hauled something important back in 1947. Their paint has peeled into abstract desert art, their fenders wear dents like campaign medals, and every windshield seems to be squinting suspiciously at tourists with smartphones. The trucks are so cool that you half expect one to cough to life, grumble about gas being 19 cents a gallon, and roll off toward the old mines. Against the backdrop of weathered buildings and mining relics, these vintage vehicles have become part of Nelson’s charm, turning the town into a giant outdoor museum where even the rust has personality.
