Firstly, I would like to express my gratitude to Mr. Tai for providing me with a lot of valuable knowledge and information. I also want to thank the coordinator team for arranging this tour for me and thank my partner, Linh Linh, for supporting me during the tour.
The guests that we guided were a lovely couple from Italy and Spain. They were on a tour around Southeast Asia, and they stayed in Hanoi for a few days after a long bus trip from Vientiane, Laos. It was the first time they visited Vietnam, so they were eager to discover Vietnamese culture, history, and lifestyle and excited to try egg coffee. Because Hanoi was the first destination in the list of many places in Vietnam, they did not want to enter too many places with fees. Therefore, we planned to pass by some free places and chat with them about the Vietnamese lifestyle on the way we were going to Sword Lake.
We first came across O Quan Chuong, then we visited the Kim Ngan communal house where we discussed the tradition of worshiping ancestors and typical offerings displayed on the altar. After seeing a couple taking a wedding photograph in front of a balcony coffee shop, they were excited and could not wait to take a photo together. The romantic and caring gestures they showed each other reflected the happiness and compatibility of this couple. As they told us their desire to try egg coffee, we took them to Dinh coffee shop. Enjoying the delicious drink, we gave them a few recommendations about famous specialties in Hanoi as well as different cities in Vietnam they should visit.
Then, we walked around Sword Lake. Fortunately, there were many stalls exhibiting products from many famous brands, and the products were offered free for everyone to try. Our guests were interested in these activities, so they did not hesitate to wait in a queue to test the taste of Pho and receive three cans of Hanoi beer which was a suitable drink in that hot weather. When passing by a stall where people could wear traditional costumes of ethnic minorities, they decided to wear hats and took some nice pictures together.
The last place in our tour was Hoa Lo prison, as they wanted to gain an insight into Vietnamese history. On the way to prison, we chatted a lot about the language and the lifestyle in Europe, and he told me to teach him some basic Vietnamese words like ‘Xin chao’ or ‘Cam on”. And it was interesting to know that he was also a volunteer guide, like us, to help exchange students at his university which improved his English skills a lot. In the prison, we presented the deprived lives of prisoners as well as their ardent patriotism. We also helped our guests clarify and have a better overview of different periods: before 1945, 1945 to 1954, and the Vietnam War. When passing by the souvenir shop, we talked about the significance of the zodiac animals, and they were very excited to know that their birth year was associated with a certain animal. Therefore, they decided to buy two items as gifts.
Because of their plan to meet some friends in the early afternoon, the tour ended. They wanted to wander around the streets and discover places on their own. Before saying goodbye, we took a nice selfie to keep memories. Our guests were nice and friendly, and it was such an unforgettable experience to lead this tour.
