At the age of 5, Huynh’s life changed forever. On the way home from school one day, he and his twin brother stopped to watch a neighbor dismantle a phosphorous bomb in order to gather the scrap metal. The next moment, the bomb exploded, instantly killing the neighbor and seriously injuring Huynh and his brother. Huynh’s injuries were more severe than his brother’s. The explosion left his face brut
ally scarred and disfigured. It would take more money than his parents ever dream of possessing in their lifetime to provide their son with the surgeries he required. Then, Folke Ryden heard about Huynh’s story during a business trip to Vietnam. Moved by the boy’s ordeal, Folke produced a documentary that aired in his native Sweden. In Stockholm, Goran Arivinius watched the piece and resolved to provide Huynh all the medical treatment he needed. Thanks to Goran and Folke, Huynh under went twelve demanding surgeries in Vietnam and the United States, and his face has mostly recovered. Eternally grateful to these two gentlemen, Huynh has made it his life’s mission to help and empower other landmine victims and disadvantaged populations.
