To anyone wondering what happened to the shop and why I haven't been attending markets: due to a cancer diagnosis in March, I've had to step away from it. It's been bumpy and derailing to say the least, but if the Knicks pulling through last night taught me anything, it ain't over til it's over. I'm still going to pursue my dream of creating even more handmade treasures to share with everyone. It might take a while, but I'll be back as soon as I can, even stronger than before. Thanks to my family, friends, and the whole Gainesville community for your continued love and support.
Here is the photo where it all began in my apartment on 52nd street in Manhattan circa 2019. At the time it was just a vision, and many chapters have come and gone since then. I'm holding a photo of my late grandfather, Gerardo Capiro, getting his hands dirty in the engine of a car. As a little girl, I would watch him magically fix my toys, engineer and fabricate his own tools and machinery. He would make old jalopies and appliances run like new again, observe the fascinating beauty of nature, and- perhaps most importantly for me at the time, we would share a childish laugh at the three stooges playing on our tv set as he enjoyed a cafecito Cubano when the day was done.
Today, the elemental principles of his essence illuminate the way I work, fight for, and repair what I believe in. It influenced the way I've pushed and expanded my technical and manual artistic abilities to craft meaningful products. That is why his name will live on with the company, and that is why when I am ready again I will continue to put in the elbow grease to make my brand shine. (And do it in style...)
So, in the meantime...to be continued, and closed for personal recovery until further notice. Love you all and see you in the sequel.
