Multi-Purpose Product ✨

A great way to transition into not only a more simple skincare routine, but an eco friendly one is to find products that are multi functional. This can really help cut back on the consumption of plastic & waste that pollutes our landfills!

✨ Moisturizer & Overnight Mask - try Skin Dream Capsule
✨ Face wash & a clay mask - try Deep Clean Clay Mask
✨ Face & Beard Oil- Try All Purpose Oil

These are just some examples, what other skincare products have you tried that are great for multi-use?

Are you team face mask or sheet mask?

The holidays bring a lot of multi-tasking, I mean it’s not called the busiest time of year for nothing. One easy way to add another thing on your list without losing time is by multi-masking. This just means you’re using more one type of face mask on your face at the same time.

Here are a few suggestions for some skin types/concerns
✨ If you have an oily T-Zone, but dry cheeks then use an oil absorbing clay mask on your forehead, nose & chin while you use a moisturizing mask on your cheeks
✨ If your skin is looking dull or wrinkly this winter then try using a brightening mask )
(Like vitamin C) on your face & a brightening eye balm around your eyes
✨if you’re experiencing dehydration or enlarged pores then we suggest a hydrating masks on your driest areas & salicylic acid or benzoyl peroxide gel on the trouble area pores.

Since half of our team is in North Carolina & the other half is in Costa Rica we are all experiencing different skin problems. Between dryness & an over production of oil, we are needing different products to tackle different needs. What are some of your most common holiday conditions where you’re from?

And this is exactly why we say eye creams aren’t exactly necessary. They have the potential to cause clogging which leads to these small white bumps called “milia”. They are explained very well by , she says:

Often mistaken for whiteheads, milia are hard, white/yellow, pearl-like bumps filled with dead skin cells and keratin. They are nicknamed “milk spots” since sometimes newborn babies get them too.

They are typically found around the eye area - included eyelids, nose, or upper cheeks but really can appear anywhere on your face. There are two types and causes of milia - primary and secondary.

Primary Milia
Dead skin cells get trapped in the pore and the build-up doesn’t “self-exfoliate” so it forms a tiny cyst. (Why it’s common for them to form around the eye area is because we typically don’t exfoliate there!)

Secondary Milia
This type of milia is caused by trauma or products like an eye cream that are super rich, sun damage, or even the use of strong corticosteroid cream. It can also be caused by sleeping in your makeup. (Yet another reason to wash your damn face at night!)

How To Treat
I will first say for milia on the eyelid or super close to your eye I would seek professional help and don’t attempt to treat yourself at home.

〰️ Don’t pick them or try to extract them at home! They can’t just be squeezed out and fingernails or blackhead extractors will just bruise and damage your surrounding skin. If you want them gone ASAP you will need to see a dermatologist, nurse, or esthetician since a sanitary puncture to the skin is required to remove. (I will note this varies state to state as some states don’t allow estheticians to use lancets.)⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
〰️ Just leave it. Sometimes they go away on their own.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
〰️ Use a retinoid, get a pro peel, or use a home peel. It will dissolve the top layer of skin and the milia will (eventually) just pop out on its own.

How To Prevent
〰️ Evaluate your products. Are you using a super-rich eye cream or concealer? It may be too much for that delicate skin and you may want to retire it.
〰️ Use an AHA product regularly like a toner or serum to help keep dead skin cells from accumulating.

Keep Calm & Continue to Purge

Have you ever tried a new product you were soooooo excited about only to get that gut wrenching feeling when you start to see acne forming? I think we have all been there at some point & it can be very frustrating. BUT good news, your skin might not be breaking out but instead purging!

“The term 'skin purging' refers to a reaction to an active ingredient that is increasing skin cell turnover rate. Skin cell turnover is the process of creating new skin cells to replace existing one & purging is just the accelerated rate of this process. You can experience this with most exfoliators & ingredients such as
✨AHA/BHA
✨Benzoyl Peroxide
✨Retinoids
✨Vitamin C

Skin purging usually lasts between 4-6 weeks. Do you see your favorite skin purging ingredient?

AKA acne scars, eczema, psoriasis, burns, & more

Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH) occurs after there is damage or irritation to the skin. Hint one of the main reasons you’re told not to pop those pimples because post inflammatory hyperpigmentation can take months to years to fully clear. The skin involved turns tan, brown, or purple & even after it heals there are possibilities of scars or other skin damage left behind. PIH can be epidermal, dermal, or mixed & treatment depends on the location it is found in the skin.

Epidermal PIH can be treated with
✨ hydroquinone
✨ retinoid
✨ corticosteroid
✨ azelaic acid
✨ glycolic acid
✨ kojic acid
✨ microdermabrasion
✨ light chemical peels

Dermal PIH is more difficult to treat and may need more aggressive procedures such as
✨ chemical peels
✨ láser surgery

Sunlight can cause PIH to darken, so as always it is very important to layer on sunscreen, wear hats, sunglasses & protective clothing everyday

We hope everyone had a safe & enjoyable Halloween yesterday or if you’re like us who didn’t celebrate it a safe & enjoyable Saturday 😊 CoconutSand didn’t take the beautiful day yesterday here in North Carolina for granted. It was sunny, chilly & the perfect circumstances for sharing time with family, one of our favorite past times.

Our family ranges from ages 6-70’s with many stories to tell & yesterday was no different. You’re looking for answers? Here’s some solutions

Dealing with acne is a full time job & we know you’re tired of struggling. Not all solutions are one size fits all which is why we wanna give you multiple outlets of relief. Acne is caused by the build up of dirt, oil, sweat, make up & all things your skin hates. You need an ingredient that will do the dirty for you and these do just that!

✨ Niacinamide is so amazing at helping your skin reduce any redness & swelling that is associated with acne. It also works to regulate the amount of acne-causing oil being produced by the glands in your skin
✨ AHA works in helping your skin exfoliate the top layers meaning it’s working to help you get rid of not only the surface gunk but what resides underneath as well
✨ Vitamin C is your go-to when it comes to reducing the acne scars that have been left behind by increasing the synthesis of collagen
✨ Retinol loves to clean you out. This powerhouse ingredient promotes cell turnover which is the process in which our skin produces new skin cells and is a major factor in how our skin looks and feels
✨ Green Tea is rich in polyphenols and have antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and antibiotic properties. They also attack free radicals.

You can always be in control of your outcome by being consistent & staying positive

Your sun essentials ☀️

More people are diagnosed with skin cancer each year in the U.S. than all other cancers combined. The sun is the number one aggressor that contributes to wrinkles, hyperpigmentation & skin damage. You can use more than just sunscreen to protect your skin from the harmful rays.

☀️ Hats
☀️ Sunglasses (you should be protective your eyes. Squinting leads to eye wrinkles and the sun can damage your sensitive eyes)
☀️Clothes with spf

Even though the seasons might be changing for a lot of people, the sun is always there. Sun damage is cumulative. About 23 percent of lifetime exposure occurs by age 18. We prefer a physical sunscreen with spf 50 & always reapply every two hours.

It’s a total myth 🤷🏽‍♀️

There has always been a huge rumor that drinking water solves all our problems. “Oh, you’re hungry?” Drink water. “Oh, you have acne?” Drink water. “Oh, your life is a complete mess?” Drink hella water!

The fact of the matter is .. water will not cure acne, blackheads or all issues you’re having with your skin. There's a lack of research actually proving water consumption impacts skin hydration. The truth is that when you drink water, it doesn't automatically go to the skin —it hydrates cells once absorbed into the bloodstream and filtered by the kidneys

💧 Use a gentle cleanser as opposed to soap
💧 Steer clear of skincare products that contain alcohol
💧 Avoid exposure to dry air, perhaps using a humidifier
💧 Avoid long, hot showers or washing dishes without gloves, limiting exposure to heavily chlorinated water
💧 Apply a body cream after a shower or a hand cream after washing hands

When we drink water it passes through our systems too quickly for it to be absorbed by our skin. It’s vital for the health of our internal organs & functions which in return can help give us healthy skin, but it’s not the sole secret in having a dewy complexion

Blackhead vs Sebaceous Filaments

Before you mistaken that blemish for a blackhead, it actually might not be. Sebaceous filaments and blackheads can look very similar, but they work very differently. For many people, sebaceous filaments will never become super noticeable (these filaments only become visible when the lining of your pore fills up with sebum). But for others with oily skin or enlarged pores, sebaceous filaments can be more visible like blackheads, but more of a light grey or tan, rather than black.

✨ Sebaceous Filaments are comprised of triglycerides, wax esters and squalene. They reside in the lining of your pores, and their primary function is to channel the flow of sebum along that lining into the skin to moisturize it.
✨Blackheads are those blemishes at the surface of the skin that appear black because as open comedones (they turn that color due to oxidization when exposed to air).

Sebaceous filaments exist to help oil flow seamlessly to the skin (without pore-clogging back ups). On the flip side, when too much sebum is produced, and mixes with dead skin cells, dirt and bacteria —  that clogs pores and can lead to the formation of a blackhead. They are most prominent on the T-Zone area (forehead, nose, chin) and you can extract them but they will naturally full back up within 30 days because they are a part of your pore structure.

The best way to treat both is to use an exfoliating face wash or treatment that clears out clogged pores with ingredients such as salicylic acid.
