Climbing the highest mountain in the Philippines—Mt. Apo—will always be a story worth telling. We took the Sta. Cruz Trail and traversed through Bansalan, with the forecast of Bagyong Uwan already testing our spirits even before we began. But on Day 1, the mountain surprised us with calm skies and perfect weather. As we passed through the farmlands of Brgy. Sibulan, the scenery opened wide—lush greens, distant ridges, and a sense that we were walking into something greater than ourselves. The trail was kind, the laughter was constant, and every step brought us closer to the heart of Apo, revealing its unexpected beauty.

Day 2 started before dawn—2:30 a.m.—as our headlamps cut through the darkness. We reached the boulders just before sunrise; the skies were clear, and the wind was gentle. At the crater, we witnessed a clearing so rare that even other groups congratulated us on our luck. But Mt. Apo has its own ways of reminding us who’s in charge. As we neared the summit, the weather turned in minutes—strong winds, thick clouds, and zero visibility. That marked the start of our real challenge. From then until our descent at Camp Reyes, we faced relentless rain and biting cold. Yet, not once did this group lose its spirit. Every laugh, every push, every shared meal became proof that strength is not just in the legs, but in the heart of the people beside you.

This climb reminded us that the mountains, like life, won’t always give us perfect conditions. Minsan ulan, minsan araw, pero tuloy pa rin ang lakaran. No matter what we face, we must always finish what we started—because strength is not just about reaching the summit, but about showing up and choosing to move forward despite it all. Kudos to this fantastic team—one of the strongest and most determined groups I’ve ever climbed with.

Mt. Apo, you humbled us once again. 🥰

Last night, we had the privilege of sharing dinner with The Philippine Looper himself, Ferdinand Dela Merced. He accepted our invitation in support of the hiking community, and what a night of stories it was. From his very first step at Kilometer Zero in Luneta to his adventures in Batanes and the warm welcome he received here in Mindanao, his journey has been nothing short of inspiring. He spoke about his climb to Mt. Apo, his serene moments in Lake Holon, and even showed us his feet, a true testament to the thousands of kilometers he has walked across our islands. Fun fact: he has already worn out 27 pairs of hiking sandals—25 destroyed by the trail, one he wears now, and one preserved in a municipality he visited as part of his journey’s legacy.

Right now, he continues his loop across Maguindanao del Norte, heading toward Zamboanga before venturing into the island provinces of Basilan and Sulu for his BARMM island loop. Ferdinand knows not everyone will understand his mission, but he asks only for respect—for walking the entire Philippines is not something everyone can imagine, let alone endure. As part of the hiking and outdoor community, we at Kampsayt Outdoors stand with him, support his journey, and pray for his safety. Ferdinand is not just walking trails—he’s walking history, becoming the first to loop the Philippines on foot.

31/08/2025

Our journey to the 4th highest peak in the Philippines—Mt. Kitanglad—started with a long ride from Davao to Bukidnon, where nature already showed its beauty along the road. Before the climb, we stayed in a local home to witness a sacred ritual, a tradition that provided us with protection and reminded us of the deep connection between culture and faith in the mountains. The stories of the locals, their warmth, and their traditions made the journey richer.

The mountain challenged us with rain from Day 1 until the last, and though the clearing we prayed for never came, we were gifted with something even greater—safety, lessons, and the joy of the trail itself. Mt. Kitanglad wasn’t just about reaching the summit, but about immersing oneself in the culture, embracing nature, and conquering the trail together.
