Before ➡️ During ➡️ After
I picked up this heavy nightstand from Facebook Marketplace Community and it needed a little love. So our journey began.
1. I made any minor repairs.
2. I used CitriStrip Paint & Varnish Stripping Gel. This is SO messy, but does the job. You generously spread the gel, leave it for about 30 minutes and use a paint stripping tool to scrape it off. I also used a Purdy Stainless Steel Short Handle Paint Scraper Wire Brush to get into the crevices.
3. Before it dried, I used Klean Strip Products Paint Stripper Afterwash. This also gets messy and dissolves fast. You have to make sure you have a good scrubber and you replace the afterwash regularly.
4. I cleaned it up with Klean Strip Products Odorless Mineral Spirits and allowed it to dry completely.
5. Then I sanded, using a DEWALT Random Orbital Sander, starting with 80 Grit sand paper and working up to 220 Grit for a smooth surface. I cleaned this with a handheld vacuum and a damp cloth to remove any sawdust.
6. I pulled out the drawers and began to stain the top and the faces of the drawers with Minwax Wood Finish Oil-Based Penetrating Stain in Natural. I let this dry for a few days so I could use a water based polyurethane on it as I didn’t want the piece to yellow over time. I also did the same for the base using Minwax True Black stain.
7. I then coated it with Minwax Polyacrylic Clear Matte Water Based Polyurethane several times, sanding with a fine grit sanding paper between coats.
8. Once it was dry, I added new matte black hardware.
All of the tools/products I used, I either already had on hand or purchased from Lowe's Home Improvement.
I think it turned out beautifully!
I won’t be keeping this piece, it will hopefully find its next loving home soon!
