The oldest way to set a stone didn't use any tools at all.

Before prongs or bezels, goldsmiths relied on something simpler: high-carat gold is soft enough to warm slightly and press directly around a stone by hand. This week's blog breaks down how pulled gold settings work, why the irregular, slightly uneven mounts you'd never want in modern jewelry are actually the clearest sign a piece is genuinely ancient, and what to look for if you want to spot one yourself.

Those tiny pictograms on your jewelry are not decoration. They are a code.

Brenda explains hallmarks, starting with the most important one: purity. Why 750, 18K and 75 percent all say the same thing, why France stamped an eagle or an owl, why Britain used a walking lion, and why Russia just wrote 56.

Before the red carpet, the cuff was already art.

Cardi B’s Tiffany & Co. Bone cuffs at Vogue World: Milano inspired a closer look at statement bracelets from our own collection.

A ruby-and-diamond Froment-Meurice cuff and a French Victorian rose-gold bangle reveal two very different expressions of 19th-century craftsmanship.

Different eras. The same presence.

Swipe to explore, then discover both pieces at brendaginsberg.com.

Why antique jewelry? Brenda finally put into words what she gets asked all the time.

It comes down to a few things: craftsmanship from an era when jewelry-making demanded extraordinary skill, a history that comes built into every piece, a more sustainable way to shop compared to buying new, and the simple fact that no two antique pieces feel quite the same. This week's blog goes into all of it, along with a look at some of the standout pieces in the collection that show exactly why.

Exceptional jewelry has never needed a famous name to matter, but sometimes it has one anyway.

A pair of Cartier Tutti Frutti earrings just sold at Sotheby’s for a hammer price of $6.2 million, and that’s before buyer’s premium and tax. Extraordinary money for an extraordinary jewel. But what actually drives results like that isn’t the name on the piece, it’s what the name represents: design that was never mass produced, craftsmanship you can’t fake, rarity that can’t be replicated.

We think about that with everything in the collection. Our circa-1950s French ruby and emerald earrings carry that same spirit of vibrant, beautifully composed gemstones. And sometimes the name does matter too, like our vintage Cartier white-metal and carnelian ear clips, a different era and a different aesthetic, but still unmistakably Cartier.

Antique. Vintage. Signed. One of a kind. The best jewelry was never meant to look like everyone else’s.

Daisy Edgar-Jones wore an 1877 Boucheron agate pendant and matching ring from the house’s private collection to the Sense and Sensibility premiere in London. The pendant was made to hold a portrait or a secret message inside, a detail that ties directly into the film it was worn for.

Some jewelry was never meant to just be seen. It was meant to hold something.

We have three pieces built on that same idea. A Victorian portrait locket from 1860-1880 set with garnets, sapphire, and seed pearls, worn close and opened in private. A signed F. Boucheron bracelet from Paris circa 1890, the same house, just thirteen years later. And a 19th century French hardstone locket in black onyx and gold, waiting for whatever you’d choose to keep inside.

What would you keep inside yours?

Patina or dirt? Knowing the difference can save your antique jewelry from real damage.

Dirt can be removed. Patina should stay; it's the surface layer of wear that builds over decades and is part of what makes an antique authentic. This week's blog covers how to tell them apart and how to clean and store silver, gold, pearls, and opals properly, including why beauty products should always go on before your jewelry, never after.

A qualified appraiser asked Brenda what 925 means. She decided it was time to clear this up.

75 percent, 750 parts per thousand, 18 karat. Three numbers that all say exactly the same thing. Here’s what the marks on your jewelry are actually telling you, and why France, Britain, India and Portugal each drew the line somewhere different.

The snake motif at NYFW isn’t a trend. It’s a return.

Dua Lipa, Anne Hathaway, and Lisa all wore serpent jewelry on the same red carpet this week, and it felt fresh and new. But snakes have symbolized transformation and eternal love in jewelry for nearly 200 years. We pulled four pieces from the collection that prove it: an articulated English snake ring from 1830, a gold necklace set with pink Burmese sapphires dated no later than 1853, a diamond and pearl snake brooch, and a gold and enamel tie pin. Same symbol, same fascination, just a different century.

The red carpet moment is new. The fascination is timeless.

Which piece would you choose?

New blog post every Friday! This week we're tackling something we get asked about constantly: what's actually true about gold.

Every atom of gold on Earth arrived here from outer space, formed in events so rare they've only happened a handful of times in the universe's history. That's real science. But we also dig into the Anunnaki theory, the Fort Knox conspiracy theories, the myth of King Midas, and centuries of alchemists trying to turn base metal into gold.

Separating fact from fiction, one Friday at a time.
