Yilei Gao 高一磊
B.1981 • Based in Quanzhou, China

Yilei Gao is a contemporary painter whose practice examines the intersections of image, language, and visual culture through the enduring dialogue between painting and poetry. Rooted in the classical Chinese concept that “poetry and painting share the same origin,” his work reactivates this aesthetic lineage within a contemporary conceptual framework.

Employing commercial iconography, high-saturation chromatic fields, repeated geometric structures, and silhouetted forms, Gao appropriates the visual lexicon of mass culture to investigate the mechanisms of consumption, representation, and symbolic production. His paintings oscillate between figuration and abstraction, constructing multilayered pictorial spaces in which metaphor, literary consciousness, and visual semiotics converge.

Group Exhibition at Canton Gallery

Scripts on the fly III（飛紙仔）explores uncertainty as an active condition of artistic practice. Drawing from a working method developed on Hong Kong film sets, where limited time, space, and resources require continuous adjustment, the exhibition considers how artists respond to shifting circumstances and the unforeseen.

Featuring Renhuo Cao, Renyuan Ding, Baoyi Fu, Kaixuan Lin, Shaoya Xie, Weibo Xu, and Yang Yang, the exhibition brings together painting, moving image, installation, and mixed-media practices, tracing different approaches to lived experience, displacement, material constraints, embodiment, and changing environments.

Rather than following a predetermined narrative, the exhibition takes shape through the encounter between distinct practices, materials, and perspectives—forming a provisional structure shaped by response, adjustment, and transformation.

Mingchang Li is a contemporary painter whose practice centers on easel painting while extending into visual and textual explorations of modern and contemporary micro-histories.

Working through layered pictorial structures, Li constructs compositions that balance order and disruption. Through processes of subtraction, appropriation, and transformation, he reshapes historical fragments into poetic visual narratives, where individual experience and collective history enter into quiet dialogue.

His practice reflects a sustained investigation into subjectivity, historical consciousness, and the complexities of human experience. For Li, painting is not only a medium of representation, but a space where history is continuously reinterpreted, questioned, and reactivated through contemporary perception.

At Seattle Art Fair 2026 Seattle Art Fair , Yiwei Gallery presents a solo project by Shanghai-based contemporary artist Sun Yao, marking the gallery’s debut at the fair.

Sun Yao 孙尧 Graduated from the China Academy of Art, Sun Yao’s practice explores the relationship between the body, existence, and the universe through painting. Developing a distinctive language of “classical abstraction,” his works merge anatomical structures, natural imagery, and psychological landscapes, creating immersive spaces between the physical and the imagined.

Founded in Los Angeles in 2019 by Yiwei Lu, Yiwei Gallery Yiwei Gallery focuses on fostering cultural exchange and supporting artists across regions and disciplines, with a particular focus on contemporary voices from East Asia and its diaspora communities.

Through this presentation at Seattle Art Fair, Yiwei Gallery continues to expand the dialogue between Chinese contemporary art and the global art community.

Xisheng Liu 刘西省
B.1970 • Based in Shenzhen, China

Xisheng Liu is a contemporary Chinese printmaker whose practice explores social memory, regional identity, and everyday lived experience through woodcut and relief printmaking. Rooted in observations of Northwestern China and frontier regions, his works depict local communities, labor, markets, and cultural life with a strong sense of humanity and historical presence.

Defined by dense linear carving, dramatic black-and-white contrasts, and layered compositions, Liu’s prints merge documentary realism with emotional depth. Through the physical act of carving, he transforms ordinary scenes into visually powerful narratives that carry both psychological intensity and social resonance.

For Liu, printmaking is not only a medium of image-making, but also a process of recording time, memory, and collective experience. His practice reflects an ongoing engagement with realism, craftsmanship, and the expressive potential of traditional printmaking within a contemporary context.

Aijiang Liu is a contemporary painter whose practice explores individual consciousness, emotional experience, and existential perception through tempera-based figurative painting.

Working with layered tempera surfaces, restrained compositions, and symbolic imagery, Liu constructs psychologically charged scenes that navigate the space between inner intensity and external restraint. His paintings often evoke a quiet atmosphere of solitude, vulnerability, and resistance, inviting viewers into deeply personal yet universally resonant emotional landscapes.
