Spotlight on Rachel:

Hi! I'm Beth's daughter, and when I'm not teaching the children of France how to swear in English, I'm a part-time buyer for the KKPW megacorp. I'm a really good bag carrier and when my mom comes to France, I work double time as bag carrier and translator, making sure she doesn't act too much like Chewbacca when she tries to communicate with French dealers. She even trusts me to go to markets in and around Besançon (where I live) all by myself! And on Saturdays at Portobello Road she even lets me play by myself under an overpass! (To clarify, there's a vintage clothing and costume jewelry market under this overpass, so it's not like she's letting me go hang out with hobos...or is she?)

No but seriously, I have a lot of fun on these trips with my mom and I really enjoy helping her shop for all these great things, as well as shopping for them on my own in France. Also, I'm the only Buyer-in-Training. So who's gonna be claiming the title of BIT of the Week every week? This girl.

Tagging things to take to the shipper in the South of France tomorrow and this fella popped up and demanded a posting before he got an ugly ID tag around his neck and had to spend an unreasonable amount of time waiting to be smothered on a container ship slowly making its way across the Atlantic. So here’s your chance to rescue him and find him a home in one of yours. He’s vintage, heavy silver plate and thinks he’s very fancy with that wavy tail and raised front foot. And he’s apparently retrieved a large game bird to boot. At 9.5” long, from tail to bird and 6.75” tall, he’ll make a good show on a stack of books or a side table. DM for more information.

Bonjour! We took the Euro shuttle over this morning and are now on the way to Besançon for a brief timeout to wash clothes and maybe even sleep past 6. Two weeks on the road in the not so fancy places where we hunt for knickknacks does nothing for your wardrobe. I got so dirty one day I actually had to buy a new tee when I got to London, or risk offending even myself. So as we get ready to leave all those English goodies behind, and hand over to the shipper in the South what we’ve bought since the shipper rendezvous a week ago, I thought I’d share some a couple of things that made my eyes light up. First up is this weird shaped antique Spode blue and white shallow bowl that I couldn’t resist. I love this pattern , and if I weren’t so lazy I’d look it up and let you know what it is. But the shape of the piece is what makes it unique and the size at 8x9.75” make it the perfect accessory to your dinner table or your display cabinets. DM for more information.

This morning we drove to Wales. . Cardiff, the capital city, was only an hour and a half away, so why not, right? And that way I could assuage the ever increasing travel guilt for coming to England 3-5 times a year and never going to Wales. And there’s also my admiration for the current Prince and Princess of Wales. So the long suffering drove “Ms. Crazy” to a cute little country where their language has lots of letters—vowels and consonants for the win!✅

So let me say this about my visit to Wales—the people are extremely nice and friendly. And the place we chose for lunch was delicious. We took a selfie in front of the red metal dragon by the castle (with a still existing slimy moat), but it looked like every other selfie and I have taken on our adventures, just with a different background. . We bought t-shirts for , and (and ourselves), so the possibility for a joint Christmas photo wearing them this year is real. Otherwise, I probably won’t be coming back here any time soon. The End

Hello from . Except I know I’m in England and I think it’s West because we looked at a map and we’re close to Wales so we might go to Cardiff tomorrow, . Y’know, when you’ve done all your UK driving with a GPS, you have no clue where you are in terms of N/S/E/W. We finally printed out a map of the counties of England and it was a total revelation🤣. Anyway, today we drove from Derby to Worcester and I found this early 20thc oak and cane stool. Clearly, it started life as a chair, but in my fantasy world, the back was destroyed in a Friday night pub fight, and the owner of the pub wisely salvaged the bottom, did a little patching and voila! If any of you have any of those French caned chairs, you could paint this, place a plump pillow on it and you’d be the fanciest person in the neighborhood. That’s just what comes to me while I try to recover from the food coma caused by the fish and chips in the second photo, which we each ate at the pub next door after I bought the stool. More little fishies. Guess it’s obvious by now that I also love antique sardine boxes, silver plate, silver, glass, majolica, blue and white, you name it! I do tend to hoard them because as you can see from the last photo, they look so good with everything. But it’s time for this one to swim away, if anyone’s interested. It’s true confessions time. I LOVE English silver because, as I so eloquently put it: English silver never lies. It’s all hallmarked, with a little lion which tells you it’s silver, then there’s a little figure like an anchor which identifies the city where the assay office which tests the metal is located, then there’s a letter of the alphabet which tells you the year the item was made, providing you have a silver hallmark book where you can look it up. There are also makers marks but I don’t mess much with those except for the ones I’ve learned over the years.

That all sounds complicated, but it’s really not. It’s yet another example of how “idigressasusual. But that’s because I’m so excited about this set of 4 footed silver trinket heart dishes in their original box. I’m always on the hunt for these darling little heart knickknacks and sell lots and lots of them, but have never seen a matching set before. And they’re hallmarked Sheffield 1896. Pretty exciting if you’re a silver lover like me. . DM for more information.

Getting close to ✈️ so I’m giving you lots of choices in one fell swoop today. Here are 3 vintage Wedgwood Jasper ware biscuit barrels in ! And all different shapes and in good condition. I’m thinking any of them would look pretty swell with your blue and white china, or at your bar as an ice bucket. And I love this shade of blue jasper ware, don’t you? Ok you guys, let the Blue & White SALE begin! Won’t last quite as long as the Majolica Sale last week because I’m off to England and France in a week for the fall buying trip and I need to have everything shipped out before I go. So, I’ll alternate French blue & white with English blue & white. Here goes:
First up is a vintage 9.5” cut corner square shaped “apéro” dish. In France, people are always having apéros which we think of as cocktail hours. The host usually prepares all the hors d’œuvres and provides the wine, although guests often show up with one or both. My favorite thing about apéros is that no one looks at their phones—it’s all conversations with friends all the time. And it can last into late evening. Anyway, I digress there are two of these spiffy dishes available and they’re SALE priced at $60 each + sales tax and 📦, if necessary. DM to purchase and tell me if you’d like one or both.

Hello all you tartanware lovers and collectors! Have lots of you seen this coin purse before? I never have so I obviously couldn’t (and didn’t) resist it. I’m not real clear on why there are so many inside compartments in this hard sided piece, but no one’s calling me to design their knickknacks so…. Actually, the “Prince Charlie”tartanware pieces are attached to the interior leather/skin pieces which have an accordion type of expandability. Other than being a little “used” inside, it’s in good condition for its advanced years. And the clasp is tight—I frankly have a hard time sometimes getting it open, but pops it open every time. 🤷‍♀️ A perfect piece of antique tartanware—well loved and well used, but still a star for your collection. At the trade only markets in France, the buying is fast. I mean FAST! I’ve been doing this a long time, and with her youth and fluency in French makes me look like a rookie. We pride ourselves on buying things that as are flawless as possible, given that they’re old and previously loved, but occasionally a piece with a hairline crack or a chip slips past us. (And sometimes our shipper “helps out”, or we do it ourselves 😩.)

This 7” tall antique pitcher with beautiful birds by the French maker Luneville is a perfect example of how we fell in love with the design of this pitcher and didn’t see the small hairline crack as shown in the last photo. It doesn’t appear to be structural or to affect the ability of the pitcher to hold liquid but it does affect the price. MAJOLICA SALE price $45+tax&📦, if necessary. DM to purchase.

Last day of the Majolica Sale. Here’s a fabulous French majolica asparagus platter that picked up for me at one of her . (Please follow her shop in France .ruche.deco She’s way better at this than I am! ) The platter is approximately 10.5x13” and I wish you could see how vibrant the colors really are. 🤦‍♀️ I’m not really sure why there are fruits and flowers around the edge of the plate nor do I understand the subtle fern like pattern in the main body of the plate (which I thought at first were just some glazing imperfections), so I’m just chalking it up to artistic license. I love it and think it would probably look great on your table or wall. Amazingly SALE priced at $85+tax&📦. DM to purchase.
