I'm 25. 😔 Wound VAC plugged straight into my tailbone wound 24/7.
Suction nonstop dragging out fluid, bacteria, blood.
No showers or baths till it's over. 😩
Nurse every 2 days for sponge changes: 45 minutes of careful prodding that still hurts like hell in that spot.
Work/gym? Standing torture or flat out.
Anything else wrecks me.
It started as “just a pimple.” But came back weekly.
Leaks soaking underwear, constant soreness and inflammation.
Mortifying AF. 😖
Physical pain sucked… but the shame hit way harder:
Ghosting dates over fear it’d leak or stink mid-dinner
Flaking on friends with bu****it excuses
Avoiding girls completely. How do you explain a leaking disaster in your crack?
Favorite sport? Dead to me.
Closest friends still don’t know.
Pilonidal sinus.
Ingrown hair nightmare in the natal cleft.
Genetics, hair, sitting, weight… docs point fingers but no single villain.
Surgery excised it.
Now VAC heals inside-out: foam sponge packed in, tubing snaking everywhere, that low endless pump hum.
Week 1: more strangers saw my open butt than anyone ever has. 😳
Pre-op sitting = agony.
Now sharp sting in any position.
Seal pops? Alarm screams. Tape patch job.
Constant ugly throb. Night hum drills your brain. Side-sleep yanks tubes.
Scariest: recurrence. Studies show a wide range (some open healing cases low like 5-10%, others up to 20-40%+), nurses see repeats. Long sitting = friction/sweat/hair migration = round 2 setup.
Standing all day tenses worse.
I can’t mentally handle round two.
I barely handled round one. 😞
Tried soft couches (sink in, crush spot), donuts/foam (flatten weird, pressure points, back killer fast).
Family kept me sane. Drives, food, checks.
But rock bottom hit hard: one night I broke down crying, staring at the ceiling at 2am with that damn hum drilling into my skull, thinking “what if this never ends?”
Total isolation. 🥺
That’s when I went down a rabbit hole at 3am reading anything about keeping pressure off open wounds.
Tested everything. Donuts/foam failed hard.
What clicked: experimenting with an adjustable air-and-water fillable pressure off-loading setup.
Inflate. Air for quick relief, water when I wanted it heavier and steadier.
Until the wound literally isn’t touching anything.
Center floats free, zero direct pressure/friction.
First sit: braced for knife-twist… nothing.
Shocked. ~25 min no flinch.
Next day ~45 min desk.
Built to hour couch. Then full car ride no agony.
Now 2+ hours easy. Desk, dinner, drives.
Body unclenches. Sometimes forget the machine’s there.
Relief hit weirdly emotional. Like exhaling after weeks of holding breath. 🥹🙌
Friend who beat this swears consistent off-loading post-heal cuts tension/friction/sweat/hair risks restarting cycle.
Nurse today: granulation excellent.
25 days in, weeks left, but hope’s real.
Grateful surgical team (smooth op), kind nurses, family.
P.S. Pic attached. Setup in use. No one notices.
They ordered the cushion on cozycyst.com
If you’re on VAC/open healing, fighting leaks, or paranoid about recurrence: ask your team about pressure off-loading options early. It changed my days.
Anyone dealing with the constant hum or alarms at night?
Other hacks for getting through the VAC phase?
Tips welcome. Happy to swap what I’ve learned. Hang in there. You’re not alone.
