Michael Jackson & Rushka Bergman, New York, September 15, 2007.

Michael Jackson photographed with fashion editor and stylist Rushka Bergman during his L’Uomo Vogue photoshoot at Boylan Studios in New York City, photographed by Bruce Weber to celebrate the approaching 25th anniversary of Thriller.

Two artists brought together by fashion, with a collaboration that would continue far beyond this single shoot.

Los Angeles, March 9, 1993.

Michael Jackson performing “Remember the Time” at the 7th Annual Soul Train Music Awards, held at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles.

Michael had badly sprained his ankle during rehearsal the previous day, but still attended the ceremony and performed. Unable to dance normally, he transformed the number into a theatrical seated performance from a gold, throne-like chair, surrounded by dancers.

That night, Remember the Time won Best R&B/Soul Single, Male, while Dangerous won Best R&B/Soul Album, Male. Michael was also honored with the ceremony’s Humanitarian of the Year Award for his charitable work.

Even injured and unable to perform the choreography as planned, he still turned the moment into one of the most memorable live appearances of the Dangerous era.

Japan, 1996.

Michael Jackson sending a special message to his Japanese fans ahead of the HIStory World Tour’s return to Japan, ending with the playful line: “I’ll be seeing you soon, Nittele-chan.”

“Nittele” is the familiar shortened name for Nippon Television, NTV, while the Japanese suffix “-chan” gives it an affectionate, friendly tone. At the time, Nippon TV was actively using “Nittere-chan” as part of its station identity and promotional campaigns, so Michael was essentially greeting the network and its viewers in the language of its own branding.

The message came as Japanese fans were preparing for Michael’s arrival with the HIStory World Tour. He reached Japan on December 11, 1996, then performed four nights at the Tokyo Dome on December 13, 15, 17 and 20, followed by two concerts at the Fukuoka Dome on December 26 and 28.

A short and charming message, but one that perfectly captures the excitement surrounding Michael’s return to Japan in 1996.

Brooklyn, September 24, 2007.

Michael Jackson photographed by Matthew Rolston at the Brooklyn Museum in New York for the December 2007 issue of EBONY , created to celebrate the approaching 25th anniversary of Thriller. Michael had specifically wanted to be photographed in an artistic setting, and the museum opened specially for the shoot on a Monday, when it was normally closed to the public.

In this image, Michael poses beside one of the museum’s monumental Auguste Rodin sculptures from “The Burghers of Calais”. The figure is Pierre de Wiessant, one of the six citizens of Calais represented by Rodin as they prepared to sacrifice themselves to save their city during the Hundred Years’ War. The Brooklyn Museum holds several figures and studies from the celebrated group.

The setting perfectly reflected the concept behind the shoot. EBONY creative director Harriette Cole explained that Michael wanted to be surrounded by art, while the team sought to present him as elegant and timeless. Stylist Phillip Bloch assembled looks from designers including Roberto Cavalli, Valentino, Yohji Yamamoto and Hugo Boss, alongside extraordinary jewelry selected for the session.

Rolston’s September 24 session would later become particularly significant: he describes it as Michael’s final formal photographic sitting.

An icon standing among masterpieces, photographed as part of the art rather than simply in front of it.

Berlin, November 20, 2002.

Michael Jackson speaking about the tabloid press while filming “Living with Michael Jackson”, during his stay at the Hotel Adlon in Berlin.

While travelling through the city, Michael was asked about the intense press coverage surrounding him. Michael responded that he avoided tabloids altogether, describing them as sensationalistic and untruthful, and saying people should be more aware of how easily those stories could distort reality. He also referenced Princess Diana, speaking about the way she had been relentlessly pursued by the press.

Michael was in Berlin that week for the Bambi Awards, where he would receive the Pop Artist of the Millennium Award on November 21. His visit drew enormous crowds outside the Adlon and equally intense media attention.

A revealing moment showing how strongly Michael felt about the relationship between celebrity, privacy and the tabloid media.

Budapest, August 7–8, 1994.

A detail of Michael Jackson’s unmistakable silhouette during the filming of the HIStory Teaser in Budapest, Hungary. Even reduced to the smallest details, the fitted black trousers, striped side seams, boots and military styling were instantly recognizable as Michael.

The custom clothing created for the production came from his longtime costume collaborators Dennis Tompkins and Michael Bush. Auction documentation for one of the surviving teaser costumes identifies the custom black Levi’s trousers with their Dennis Tompkins & Michael Bush label, part of the specially constructed military-inspired look created for the film.

Directed by Rupert Wainwright, the nearly four-minute film was shot around Budapest on August 7 and 8, 1994, months before the release of HIStory: Past, Present and Future, Book I. Locations included the grounds of Buda Castle, Dózsa György Avenue, the area around Heroes’ Square, and imagery incorporating Budapest landmarks such as the Chain Bridge.

The monumental imagery, enormous military procession and Michael’s heavily decorated black uniform helped establish the visual language that would define the coming HIStory era.

Michael never simply wore a costume. The proportions, military references, metallic details and even the line of his trousers became part of the performance itself. The King of Pop was also, unquestionably, a King of Style.

Auckland, November 11, 1996.

Michael Jackson performing “Rock With You” at Ericsson Stadium in Auckland, New Zealand, during the first leg of the HIStory World Tour. The song formed part of the Off the Wall medley, alongside “Off the Wall” and “Don’t Stop ’Til You Get Enough.”

For a few minutes, the huge HIStory production shifted back to the effortless groove and disco sound of Michael’s late 1970s breakthrough, giving the audience a direct connection to the Off the Wall era nearly two decades later.

A timeless song, a completely different era, and proof of how naturally Michael could bring his earliest solo classics into the scale of a 1990s stadium show.

Auckland, November 9, 1996.

Michael Jackson performing the final breakdown of “Billie Jean” at Ericsson Stadium in Auckland, New Zealand, during the first leg of the HIStory World Tour.

The ending of the performance gave Michael space to stretch the song beyond the choreography, adding extra footwork, spins, pauses and rhythmic movement before bringing one of his signature numbers to a close.

Few performances are as instantly recognizable as Billie Jean. The fedora, the glove, the bassline, the moonwalk and the final breakdown had already become part of pop culture history, turning every live performance into a moment audiences knew they were witnessing something iconic.

Gstaad, September 27, 1993.

Michael Jackson photographed in Gstaad, Switzerland, during a short break in the second leg of the Dangerous World Tour.

After performing in Tenerife on September 26, Michael travelled to Gstaad and stayed for several days at Chalet Ariel, the private Alpine home of his close friend Elizabeth Taylor.

The visit came during an extremely difficult period, only weeks after the allegations against him had become public. Combined with the physical demands of the tour, exhaustion and his growing dependence on prescription pain medication, Michael used the break to rest, recover and step away from the intense pressure surrounding him.

While in Gstaad, he was seen walking through the town centre and visiting local shops, including Pernet-Comestibles and Hermenjat Sport Store, enjoying a few relatively quiet days away from the stage and the media storm.

A rare moment of calm in the middle of one of the most turbulent periods of his life.

Las Vegas, September 2002.

Michael Jackson greeting a group of Spanish fans outside the Four Seasons Hotel at Mandalay Bay while filming Living with Michael Jackson with journalist Martin Bashir. The Las Vegas material was recorded during the documentary’s 2002 filming period; available timelines generally place this segment in September 2002.

After the fans told Michael they had come from Spain, he immediately responded, “Sunny Spain,” before warmly talking about the country and its people. He described the Spanish as “so sweet” and “beautiful people,” turning what could have been a brief encounter into one of the lighter, more spontaneous moments captured during the documentary.

The scene also shows Michael stopping to look at the pictures and banners the fans had brought for him, visibly appreciating the effort they had made.

A small but memorable glimpse of Michael interacting naturally with fans far away from the stage.
