The Great Animal Race
How the Zodiac Animals Got Their Order
Long, long ago, the Jade Emperor wanted to choose twelve animals to help measure time.
He decided to hold a race.
“The first twelve animals to cross the river,” he said,
“will each have a year named after them!”
All the animals were excited.
But there was one big problem…
🌊 The river was wide.
🌊 The water was fast.
🌊 And everyone had to find their own way across.
🐭 The Rat’s Plan
The Rat was small.
He knew he couldn’t swim as fast as the others.
So he made a clever plan.
He asked the strong Ox,
“May I ride on your back?”
The Ox was kind.
“Of course,” he said.
The Ox walked steadily through the water.
Just before they reached the land…
The Rat jumped off!
He ran over the finish line first!
🏁 Rat – 1st place
🐮 Ox – 2nd place
🐯 The Tiger
The Tiger swam strongly.
The river pushed him back,
but he never gave up.
He came third.
🐱 The Cat
The Cat tried her best.
The water was cold and fast,
but she kept paddling.
She made it across and came fourth
🐲 The Dragon
The Dragon could fly!
But instead of racing straight to the finish,
he stopped to help others.
He blew wind to help clear the river.
That’s why he came after the Cat.
🐍 The Snake
The Snake was quiet.
He slipped through the water
and surprised everyone at the finish line
🐴 The Horse
The Horse galloped through the water
as fast as he could.
He was brave and strong
🐐 🐵 🐔 The Goat, Monkey & Rooster
These three worked together.
They built a raft.
They shared.
They helped.
They didn’t argue.
They crossed together.
🐶 The Dog
The Dog loved the water.
He splashed and played.
He could have been faster…
but he was having too much fun!
🐷 The Pig
The Pig got tired.
He stopped for a snack.
He had a little nap.
Then he finished last —
but he still finished!
And that is how the years were named:
Rat, Ox, Tiger, Cat, Dragon, Snake,
Horse, Goat, Monkey, Rooster, Dog, Pig.
And every 12 years…
The circle begins again. ✨
