🏁 RACE REPORT – Backdraft Racing South Africa ENDURANCE SERIES / SUPER GTs – Dezzi Raceway 🏁

This weekend we went completely leftfield and jumped into a Backdraft Cobra! 😳
Having never raced a RWD car before, never mind a Cobra, I arrived at Dezzi Raceway on Friday bright-eyed and bushy-tailed, ready to acquaint myself with the car.
Well... the weather had other plans. 🌧️ Friday practice was scrapped, so Saturday was going to be baptism by fire!

🌧️ WET QUALIFYING
Saturday's 07h30 10-minute wet qualifying session was literally the first time I met the tail-happy monster.
Two laps later, I managed a 1:43 and stone last 😂
Thankfully, we had a one-hour endurance race straight afterwards, so there was plenty of time to start figuring out which end of the Cobra wanted to go where!

🏁 ENDURANCE RACE
Starting 15th, I quickly became more comfortable with the car. It had a horrible flat spot around 4000rpm, but once I figured out how to work around it, we started moving forward.
And moving forward we did!
We worked our way all the way up to 2nd position, before the team called me in for the mandatory pit stop with around five minutes remaining.
That dropped us back to 10th overall, but 1st in Class C! 🏆.

More importantly, we'd gone from a wet 1:43 to a 1:23.0 and I was finally starting to understand the Cobra.

🔥 SPRINT QUALIFYING.
Another session, another second found — 1:22.1.
Unfortunately, everyone else had found pace too 😂 and that put us 10th in class.

🏎️ SPRINT RACE 1
A good start saw me pick up two positions on the opening lap.
Lap 2... Turn 5... and I got the Cobra properly sideways. 😬
Ross Hill was close behind and unfortunately collected me. With the damaged wheel arch critically rubbing the tyre, I had no choice but to retire the car.
The Backdraft team jumped straight in and made quick work of getting the Cobra back into shape for Race 2, where we'd be starting stone last!

🔥 SPRINT RACE 2
Another good start and two positions gained on Lap 1.
From there, I spent pretty much the entire race about 30cm off the bumper of Justin Brancato in the car ahead for 10 laps solid!
After already damaging a rental Cobra once that afternoon, I wasn't particularly interested in doing it twice 😂 With the cars so evenly matched, I tried everything I could to pressure him into making a mistake.
He held his nerve.
But man... what a tussle!

And that, for me, sums up exactly what the Backdraft series is about:
Simple. Close. Clean. Raw racing fun.

We will DEFINITELY be back to have another go with the boys and girls from Backdraft.

A massive thank you to Brian, Tony, Bradley and Sandile, as well as the other awesome gents whose names have unfortunately slipped my mind. From helping me get comfortable in a completely unfamiliar car to repairing my little Turn 5 indiscretion, you guys were absolutely awesome.

Denver Branders and the Super GT team, you guys have a brilliant series on the go, thank you for having me and always making us feel so welcome.

Team Prece! You guys are rock stars, well done to Marc Prece for getting driver of the guest house, he kept it tidy all weekend, Rob Prece , Melanie Prece and Brett Prece , thank you for the comeraderie and always making motorsport a Jol! I appreciate you!

You helped create a racing memory I won't forget anytime soon.

From never having raced a RWD car...
To meeting a Cobra for the first time in a wet qualifying session...
To a Class C endurance win and some seriously close sprint racing.
What a weekend! 🏁🔥
We'll be back. The Cobra and I have unfinished business. 😎

🇲🇿 ATCM MAPUTO — Silvercup 2.0 Round 6 - Race Report 🏁

We headed off from the familiar Shell garage at Red Star Raceway, bound for tarmac untested and the unfamiliar territory of ATCM Maputo.

I won’t make any bones about it — once you cross the border, everything you’re accustomed to becomes vastly different! Keeping our wits about us, we eventually arrived at the circuit, and it genuinely felt like finding an oasis in the desert.

From the moment we arrived, the hospitality was on another level. Fresh-faced assistants were there to help with everything from offloading and cleaning the cars, to getting us buckled in and refuelling between sessions. The ATCM officials, staff and organisers could not have made us feel more welcome.

Friday testing brought back an old enemy — power steering! We’d had just two days to turn the car around after the previous weekend’s Extreme Festival , and our rushed steering rack repair had a few glitches. The solution for the weekend? Accept that it was going to leak around 200ml of fluid per session, keep topping it up and SEND IT!

Other than that, Friday was faultless, and that evening we were treated to a fantastic welcoming dinner at the very friendly ATCM clubhouse.

Saturday — RACE DAY! 🏁

There aren’t many race mornings where you leave a hotel with the circuit on one side and the ocean on the other. Definitely a first for me!

Qualifying saw us put the Polo 4th overall and 2nd in class, pipped by the Wessel Mostert BMW, local specialist Faudo Sidoque and Andre Bettencourt in his absolute monster of a V8 Turbo Cobra.

Race 1

A clean, professional race. We didn’t have an answer for Wessel’s pace, while Faudo and Andre unfortunately suffered mechanical failures.

We brought it home 2nd overall. 🥈

Race 2

A little confusion on the rolling start somehow resulted in me leading the race for the opening lap!

Wessel eventually found his way through, and with the grandstands filling up, I decided to hang back and let Zander Jacobs and Duane Brown through so we could give the crowd something to watch.

That may have been a mistake. 😂 Once I let them through, they certainly weren’t interested in giving the positions back!

An almighty battle followed, and they made me work properly hard to find my way past again. Eventually we fought our way back to 2nd overall — although with considerably more sweat on the brow than planned!

Race 3

This time we found ourselves in a fantastic battle with local hero Andre Bettencourt, now behind the wheel of a second Cobra.

Andre drove incredibly cleanly, and his local knowledge showed. He worked his way ahead before I triggered an oil-pressure safety cut while asking a little too much of the car through the high-G sections.Zander was right there to capitalise and found his way through.

At that point, discretion won over ambition. Rather than risk damaging the car, I elected to bring her home and make sure we were there for the incredible end-of-race celebration in front of the grandstand — another completely new and spectacular experience.

🏆 2ND OVERALL FOR THE DAY! But the result almost feels secondary. The circuit. The people. The hospitality. The atmosphere. The trip across the border. Racing somewhere completely unfamiliar. And the reception from the Mozambican motorsport community made this one of those race weekends that will stick with me for a very long time.

If you’re sitting on the fence wondering whether you should make the trip to race at ATCM...STOP WONDERING. JUST GO.

Obrigado ATCM and Maputo — you were absolutely unforgettable! ❤️ Obrigado Silver Cup Racing 2.0 for making the weekend possible!

🏁 ROUND 4 – COASTAL ADVENTURES AT ALDO SCRIBANTE! 🌊🔥

What a weekend!

We made the great trek down to Gqeberha for Round 4 of the 111/ GT Sports & Saloons championship with the Regional Extreme Festival and our annual coastal adventure — this time taking on the awesome Aldo Scribante Raceway.

Thursday practice went almost perfectly. The car ran beautifully apart from a funky power steering pump, Michael Howard quickly swapped out, and from there we were ready for business.

Friday went 100% according to plan and it was clear we had a seriously quick car underneath us. With 111 and GT combined, however, there was around a 16-second difference between the fastest and slowest cars, so navigating traffic was always going to be part of the challenge.

Qualifying and the car was ON FIRE! 🔥

Unfortunately, finding a clean lap was nearly impossible. We seemed to catch at least two cars on every flying lap and I probably started overdriving the car trying to make up for it.

Nevertheless — 5th overall and POLE for GTB! 🥇

Race 1 got off to a frantic start. We moved into 4th overall and tucked onto the back of the hard-fighting top three before the race was red flagged following a number of incidents behind us.

On the restart we had a front-row seat to the GTA guys going at each other hammer and tong. We kept ourselves out of trouble, ran our race and brought it home for our first GTB WIN of the weekend! 🏆

Then came Race 2… and this one was FUN!

Another cracking start saw us go from 4th to 2nd by Turn 2!

Mark quickly fired back in the M-Coupe, followed by Jared Rossouw in the SupaPolo, while Wayne unfortunately developed boost issues and was left circulating well below his normal pace.

Then Jared went a little too deep into Turn 1 on Lap 2 and suddenly we were back up the road, chasing Mark for the overall race lead.GAME ON!

By Lap 5, however, we hit what can only be described as Gillooly’s traffic on a Friday afternoon. 😂

At one stage we were lapping as many as eight cars in a single lap while still trying to chase down Mark. Jared managed the traffic better and before long he was right back on my tail, with Mark only a couple of car lengths ahead.

I managed to keep Jared behind for another two laps while still pushing after Mark, but with around a lap and a half remaining, the power steering decided its weekend was over.Jared was through.

From there it was a case of grabbing the car by the scruff of the neck and muscling it around Aldo to the chequered flag.We made it — and brought home another GTB WIN! 🏆🏆

Pole position. Two races. Two GTB wins. And some absolutely epic racing.

Aldo Scribante Racetrack , you were incredible! What a challenging, fast and rewarding little circuit — it has very quickly worked its way onto my list of all-time favourites.

More importantly, these weekends are about so much more than just the results.

A massive thank you to everyone who made the trip and supported us. Stacey Visser and Amber, as always, gave us unconditional support while simultaneously scaring everyone in the grandstands with their cheering. 😂❤️

To Ernest Heather , Mike Howard, our Durban imports Llew and Steve, and the Spicer family — thank you. You guys made sure we were perfectly prepared every time the car went onto the circuit.

We are blessed to have a very special little unit around us, and that is what makes these race weekends and this whole journey so memorable.

And finally, to Origen Oil , WIX Filters Southern Africa , 959 Panelbeaters & Spraypainters , TurboDirect S.A , Auto Express - Car Service & Repair - Boksburg, Dynamic Propshaft & Drivetrain Specialists, G-Force Customs who stand behind us — thank you for continuing to make this machinery and programme possible.

Together we have built something that attracts a lot of attention wherever it goes, and I am incredibly grateful for the backing and belief.

Another massive thanks to Stephen² Racing for the awesome pits, telephonic driver training and refreshments on arrival, Geoff you are a legend!!

Gqeberha — what an adventure! 🌊

Two GTB wins coming home to Gauteng. 🏆🏆

On to the next one! ATCM Maputo this weekend! 🏁🔥
