Technically I wouldn’t call this a contour drawing, it feels more like a linework outline, doesn’t it? But I love how the strictness of the flower shapes are set off against the organically rendered rectangle. It’s almost ironic, that the geometric shape in this artwork is the most organically rendered. The rectangle here performs a graphic purpose, giving the tattoo a centre of gravity and an anchor on the body.

Sometimes an artwork demands that i paint it with only a one or two brushes, not my full set i always use. This piece is almost entirely devoid of line, comprised mostly of shading and soft gradated tones. Now, the latter i know very well, but i usually anchor it with severely weighted line. Here were looking for a delicateness, trying to describe the softness of a newspaper folded into a piece of origami.

Its the interaction between stylized rococo embellishment and 90’s tribal that makes this hit a very specific flavour for me. Something i haven’t really seem or found at all. The grey in the background will also no doubt lighten up over time, making the background design really secondary, supplementing, and softer.
