Big bass are on the move and headed for the shallows
Brendon Venter hit Groot Marico yesterday ahead of the incoming front, aiming to take advantage of the drop in the barometer. He reports: “We were fishing a typical spawning flat with gravel on the bottom with scattered brushpiles and pencil weeds bass were staging on. As soon as the wind started pumping we changed over to Tee-Bone Tandem Willow 1/2oz Spinnerbaits in Purple Pearl Shad and on the second cast I landed a 2.60kg female and a couple of casts later a 2.04kg fish.”

August is renowned for churning out MONSTER bass on big baits, but you don’t need to break the bank to do it. If you’re headed to the tackle store today or tomorrow checkout Keitech’s 6.5” Easy Shiner and 5.8” Fat Swing Impact swimbaits. All you need to get started is a 7’3 – 7’6” medium heavy or heavy powered rod, 15-20lb fluoro and a weighted hook like the Hayabusa WRM958WT Wide Gap Screw Lock in the 5/0, 1/4oz model. The heavier the weight the more control you’ll have when slow rolling bigger swimbaits and keeping them in contact with the bottom, the water is still warming so those bass will still be hugging the bottom at times. Get out there and give it a go around known spawning flats, main lake points and channels leading into spawning bays.

THE BEST WAY TO RIG THE EASY SHINER
To get the best out of the Keitech’s larger Easy Shiner swimbaits rig them on a weighted swimbait hook like the Hayabusa’s WRM958WT Wide Gap Screw Lock range.

PRO TIP:
But here’s a pro tip, these baits have been designed to be ultra-supple, so that they collapse when a big bass crushes them for better hooksets, but to get more bass per bait rig the Easy Shiner onto the screw lock and skin hook it. Next up insert a nail or Pagoda weight into the side of the body just underneath the bend of the hook, this adds a bit of weight BUT stops the hook from tearing past that point resulting more bass and more bang for your buck.

Our Keitech TEE-BONE spinnerbait is absolutely deadly in the grass, even during mid-winter as local angler Karel Lensley recently discovered. “The morning ended up being uneventful with no bites but by early afternoon water temperatures had peaked at 17.2°C pushing fish into the shallows. A chartreuse, white tandem Willow version fooled this 2.5kg kicker that was holding to isolated pencil reeds”, he said.
