At 50, I carried the Olympic flame.
I thought about my past.

And I cried.

1860’s
Indian indentured labourers arrived
in Natal, South Africa under British colonial rule
to work on sugar cane plantations.

My ancestors were part of that system.

1893
Mathama Gandhi arrived in South Africa
and confronted British racism
and systems controlling Indian labour.

1948
Apartheid became law in South Africa,
controlling where non-white people
could live, work, learn, and move.

1994
Nelson Mandela became President after
27 years in prison opposing the apartheid system.

My father finally became a supervisor.

Over generations, these men exposed
the systems shaping millions of lives.

Not just politically.
Psychologically.

Systems like colonialism and apartheid
do not just shape economies.

They shape psychology.

What families normalise.
What families never say aloud.

My grandparents worked in factories.
My mother worked in a shoe factory.
My ancestors crossed oceans through systems of control.

I crossed oceans through education and choice.

Generations raised inside controlled systems
learn early that safety and belonging are conditional.

Systems can end.

Their psychological effects often do not.

That inheritance can drive:

▪️overachievement
▪️perfectionism
▪️hyper-independence
▪️reading power dynamics early

And it teaches you how to:
▪️survive hierarchy
▪️navigate exclusion
▪️outperform in spaces never designed for you

After more than 30 years in
corporate life, I finally understood
why I could read systems so quickly.

The laws changed.
The behaviours often did not.

Some families pass down wealth.
Mine passed down survival, resilience,
and the ability to read power.

For me, the Olympic flame carried
generations that survived
colonialism, apartheid, and silence.

And chose, finally, to name it.

I never imagined that at 29 years old, I would be lying awake at night wondering if my heart will keep beating long enough for me to survive.

My name is Akshay Surujpal, and I am currently fighting severe mitral valve regurgitation — a life-threatening heart condition that is slowly taking away my strength, my peace, and my future.

Last night was one of the most terrifying moments of my life.

I suddenly could not breathe properly. It felt like a heavy weight was crushing my chest while my heart struggled inside me. I panicked. I was scared. I honestly thought those could be my final moments. Sitting there gasping for air made me realize just how fragile life truly is. 💔

I am trying so hard to stay strong, but the truth is… I am terrified.

Terrified that my condition will worsen before I can get the surgery I desperately need. Terrified that my family may lose me. Terrified that my life could end simply because I cannot afford the medical costs in time.

No one wants to beg for help publicly. No one wants to feel helpless. But today, I am putting my pride aside because I want to live. 🙏

I still have dreams. I still want more time with the people I love. I still want the chance to wake up one day without fear in my chest.

That is why I am asking you — from the bottom of my heart — please help me.

Every donation, no matter how small, brings me closer to life-saving surgery. And if you cannot donate, please share this post. Your share could reach the person who helps save my life.

Sometimes strangers become the reason someone survives. Maybe today, that person could be you. ❤️
