And then this happened! My workshop is in an extension of the main barn here on the farm and the barn doors are large sliding panels on metal frames. They are by no means air tight and with the recent wet and windy weather during the week a lot of moisture blew into the barn and workshop. This caused the slats on my bar build to warp and distort! I’ll have to see if I can correct this with some bracing at the back otherwise they will need to be replaced.

The actual build is now complete. I’ll be spending the next few days or so touching up and concentrating on the general ‘finishing’. Then on to my favorite - sanding. Once it has been sanded and varnished the final step will be to put in the backing boards that close all the gaps between the slats.

You can never re-check your work too many times. One of the golden rules in woodworking is ‘measure twice, cut once.’ I checked my measurements three times and although they were spot on I was about to cut an expensive piece of plywood (R900.00) so I decided to verify my cutting setup one more time before I went ahead and made the actual cut. Oh boy was I glad I did! While my triple checked measurements were bang on I realized I had measured from the wrong point and my saw guide fence was a whole two centimeters out 🙈. Doing one more final check I thankfully avoided an expensive mistake. Other than that I made some good progress on the bar today.

I think this is why many woodworkers drink b**r! If you do not have a dust extraction system in your workshop (as in my case) you rely heavily on protective equipment such as dust masks and goggles. Never-the-less you still breath a certain amount of wood dust in and personally I have found that b**r is the best detergent to clear it all out of the throat. B**r even helps if you get dust in your eyes. No really! 😋
