We are taking a quick spring break to refresh. The nursery and office will be closed from Thursday and reopen on Monday morning.
During that period no nursery appointments and responses to emails and whatsapp will be be delayed.

Friday Focus: Water
It is raining and pouring in KZN at the moment so it seems like a good chance to talk about watering airplants.
💧They do need water, what makes them different is that they absorb all their water through their leaves not their roots. The surface of the leaf has to be wet in order for the plant to absorb water, they don't absorb atmospheric water.
💦 How you water them is less important than ensuring that they get thoroughly wet all over. If you have them inside a soak in a bowl of water once a week is an easy way to give them a deep water. Outside, they need water in addition to rain during dry periods, again, aim for weekly. You can spray them with a hose or mist spray, just make sure the whole plant gets wet.
💨Airplants need good airflow to dry out after watering, if they stay wet for too long they can rot. During wet periods you may need to tip plants upside down to prevent them holding water.

Watering needs will depend on the species of your plant and your local conditions. When leaves curl up your plant is often telling you it is thirsty. As long as the plant dries out within a day of watering, ideally a few hours, then it is very hard to overwater.

Friday Focus: Filifolia and Fuchsii
These 2 plants are both coming into bud at the moment, both are relatively small with a pincushion shape and fine leaves.
T. fuchsii var gracilis has fine silvery leaves and produces a tall bloom spike with pink/orange bracts and purple petals.
T filifolia has green fine leaves with dark bases. The bloom spike and petals are purple.

As with most fine leaved airplants they like good air movement but can also dry out quickly so bright light and air flow with regular water is important. They work well mounted as they are quite light and can blow away easily. Once mounted they can form lovely clumps.

Both plants are available to order from the website for delivery to door or Pudo locker.

Note that T. fuchsii is often mis-sold as T.argentea. Argentea is similar but has different flowers and is not really a pin-cushion shape, it is also more rare in cultivation. Here at Rare & Air, I am pretty particular about getting names correct and never sell a plant until we are sure of the identification. It's important that our customers can trust that the plant they want is the one that arrives in their parcel.

A little transparency about a price change.

From 1 October, our courier costs are going up: delivery to your door will be R135, and delivery to a Pudo locker will be R70 to R110 depending on where you are.

We wanted to be upfront about this rather than quietly build it into plant prices. This increase is the courier's, not ours, and we're passing it on exactly as we receive it. If you've ever wondered why our Pudo price is a bit higher than the rate the courier itself advertises, it's because we still have to drive your parcel to the lockers (sometimes several lockers if they are full) ourselves, which means fuel and time.

Good news: orders over R1,250 still ship free and our plants are good value and great quality as always.

As a small, family run nursery, we know every rand counts, for us and for you. We'd rather be honest about the pressures a small business faces than pretend they don't exist. And whatever happens with courier costs, the care that goes into packing your plants safely for their journey to you will never change.

September in South Africa means spring. Here in KZN the temperature is still up and down, but the days are getting longer and we're having a few spring showers.

It's a time all plant lovers enjoy, as things start to grow and bloom. We want to share a little spring joy with you.
