🔥 Why I Started Braai & Brush
Like most good South African ideas… this one started around a braai.
A while back I was researching business opportunities in South Africa that someone could realistically start with limited capital. A few industries kept coming up, and one of them was braai culture.
That immediately made sense to me.
Anyone who knows me knows I'm usually the one standing at the fire. Around family and friends I somehow became the default braai master over the years.
I wasn’t even taught how to braai. I mostly learned through trial and error, watching older guys, and figuring it out myself.
My first memory of braaiing was when I was about 5 or 6 years old… and the meat was definitely half cooked 😅
But something about the braai always stuck with me.
For me it’s never just about food.
It’s the vibes.
The jokes and banter.
Serious conversations with friends.
Watching rugby or soccer together.
Music playing in the background.
Sometimes it’s even just the peace of sitting around a fire while camping, taking a break from the chaos of city life.
And that’s when I started noticing something.
Before almost every braai there’s that moment where someone says:
“Wait… who bought the tongs?”
“Did someone bring the lighter?”
“Where’s the brush?”
“Ah man, we forgot the spices.”
Then someone ends up running around to two or three different shops while everyone else is waiting.
It’s actually pretty frustrating when you think about it.
That’s where the idea for **Braai & Brush** started.
The goal was simple:
Make braai preparation easier.
Instead of shopping around multiple stores and forgetting things, just have everything you need in one proper bundle.
At the same time, I’ve always wanted to build something of my own.
I come from a background in sales, logistics and supply chain, and even ran a transport operation delivering timber to major suppliers like Sappi and NCT.
But I’ve always had a passion for brand building and marketing.
I didn’t just want to sell products.
I wanted to build a brand that represents modern South African culture, the humour, the language, the lifestyle and something proudly local that people can relate to.
Something my son and family could be proud of one day.
The journey hasn’t been perfect though.
Like most businesses starting out, there have been challenges and moments where people didn’t understand the idea.
Some said the bundles were too expensive and that people could just buy the items individually themselves.
But that actually proved the point.
Braai & Brush exists for convenience.
Everything in one place.
Ready for the braai.
Perfect for your own braai, a gift for a friend, Father’s Day, corporate events or even a golf day prize.
Recently things became even more real.
I lost my job, which means this brand I started building on the side now has to work even harder.
But in a strange way, that’s also pushed me to go all in.
Because for me this isn’t just a business.
It’s about building freedom, independence and creating something real that lasts.
Something proudly South African.
Something that brings people together around the fire.
So if you’ve supported Braai & Brush, shared a post, or even just followed the journey, thank you.
If you love a proper braai as much as I do, stick around.
The fire is just getting started 🔥
