Joanna LUMLEY, at the time known in South Africa for her role as Purdey in the TV series The New Avengers, landed in Cape Town in early September 1978. She was accompanied by the photographer Lord Lichfield for a fashion shoot. They were guests at a dinner in Boschendal and also attended the Miss Pears 1978 event in Johannesburg. Kristina Anne TAYLOR (6), from Benoni, was crowned Miss Pears 1978, winning R1,000 in prize money. There were 11,000 entries.

Miss Pears 1977 was blue-eyed blonde Livia COETZER.

Miss Pears 1980 was Alana RABIE (3). She won R1,000 and clothes from Goophees. The top South African fashion photographer, Gavin FURLONGER, did a photo shoot with her. This was the 5th year of the contest.
