You do not need antibiotics to raise healthy chickens. You need these steps.
For years I have kept my birds without using antibiotics or random drugs until Few weeks ago when coryza hit my flock. That was a big reminder that Disease looks for gaps in management.
Close the gaps and you control most problems.
Here is what keeps my birds strong.
1.Clean housing
You keep the house dry.
You remove wet litter daily.
You disinfect between batches.
Dry litter reduces ammonia. Ammonia damages the respiratory tract and opens the door to diseases like coryza. Good ventilation lowers humidity and slows bacteria spread.
2.Quality feeding
Your farm should not rely only on commercial feed alone especially is youβre keep Kienyeji chicken. Add vegetables.
Vegetables supply:
-Vitamins A, D, E, K
-Vitamin C for stress control
-B vitamins for growth and energy
-Minerals like calcium, phosphorus, magnesium
-Natural antioxidants
Vitamin A protects the eyes and respiratory lining. When birds lack it, they become prone to respiratory infections. Greens like sukuma wiki, spinach, pumpkin leaves support immunity.
Balance still matters. Protein levels must meet age requirements. Layers need about 16 to 18 percent protein. Growers need 18 to 20 percent.
3.Clean drinking water
Water is the first feed.
Dirty water spreads E. coli, salmonella, and other bacteria fast.
Wash drinkers daily.
Flush lines if you use automatic systems.
Add approved sanitizers when needed.
If water intake drops, feed intake drops. Growth drops. Health of the birds drops.
4.Clean feeders and drinkers daily
Feed attracts mold. Mold produces toxins.
Aflatoxins damage the liver and weaken immunity. Once immunity drops, any infection spreads fast. Daily washing protects your flock from hidden losses.
5.Isolate sick birds immediately
Isolation protects the whole flock.
Respiratory diseases spread through droplets. One sick bird in a crowded house infects many within days. Remove sick birds early. Observe them separately. Treat only where needed.
Isolation reduces drug use. It protects your healthy birds from exposure. It saves money.
Antibiotics do not replace management.
Clean housing, balanced feeding, clean water, strict isolation.
If you control these four, you reduce most disease pressure on your farm.
