🍅 TOMATO WEEK | GROWING TIPS 🍅
National Tomato Week is in full swing, and if you’re growing tomatoes this season, a little extra attention can make a big difference to the health of your plants and the size of your harvest.
Here are a few simple tips to help your tomatoes thrive:
Give them plenty of sun. Tomatoes love sunshine, so choose a spot with 6 to 8 hours of direct sunlight.
Start with good soil. Add compost and a quality vegetable fertiliser to give your plants the nutrients they need to grow well.
Water consistently. Keep the soil evenly moist and water deeply at the roots. Try not to let the soil dry out completely between watering.
Support your plants. Stake or trellis your tomatoes while they’re still young. Once they’re loaded with fruit, you’ll be glad you did!
Feed throughout the growing season. Once your plants start flowering and producing fruit, use a good tomato fertiliser to keep them growing and producing.
Mulch around the base. Mulching helps retain moisture around your plants.
Don’t forget the pollinators. Bees and other beneficial insects play an important role in the garden, so create a welcoming space for them too.
And why not try a few different varieties?
From cherry and cocktail tomatoes to larger slicing varieties, growing different types means you can enjoy a whole range of flavours from your own garden.
Nothing beats picking a ripe, homegrown tomato straight from your garden!
