The crown prince of braai in the Western Cape is without any doubt Rooikraans. This hardwood from the coast has been the braai companion of many Capetonian homes since 1830 when it was first introduced to the Cape Flats.
Accacia cyclobes or the Red Eye Wattle is so called after the seed it produces.
It is a very invasive species and is known to outgrow all of the local plant biospheres. Growing as a shrub or a small tree, it spreads quickly.
The wood itself has beautiful coloring with its distinctive center that varies from brown to a red core.
The braai is what it's all about, and in winter, this is a great all-rounder for braai and fire places.
It burns with a mid size flame that reaches temperatures of up to 520 C degrees and the coals will retain its heat of nearly 200C for up to 2 hours.
With so many Capetonions having this braaiing relationship with Rooikraans, its availability has been decreased dramatically and quality of braai wood has been the headache of many a keen braaier.
