Rejuvenate your garden, by joining Cape Town’s biggest plant fair, the Kirstenbosch Plant Fair – without leaving the comfort of your home. Choose from more than 10,000 indigenous plants on sale, online. This vast selection is offered to you at excellent prices and your involvement supports our plant conservation projects.

The theme for this year's special event? It’s never been more important to get out into nature, even if it’s simply the safe space provided by your garden. Therefore, the theme is "Gardening for Happiness!"

The plant fair is hosted online for just more than two weeks, from Saturday 22 May, ending on Sunday 6 June 2021.

Insect identification post!

While very uncommon indoors, if you're growing outdoor plants this year, there is a good chance you'll encounter one or even a few of these little guys, this is the larval form of a Lady Bug and just like the parents, it is a highly effective aphid and white fly control predator, arguably more effective than the parents due to it's rapid growth with appetite to match.

So don't worry when you see one of these little guys, they're on your side and are doing their part :-)

Protect your eyes and correct the tone of HPS with these grow room shades available in store.

Not everyone considers how strong the lighting we use to grow is and what that means for your eyes long term, I personally have always stuck to wearing shades in grow areas for this exact reason.

While your regular sunglasses will do the job perfectly, these shade correct the tone of HPS bulbs to an almost normal daylight colour, making problems and ripeness much easier to spot in the grow area.

What exactly is going on here?

This is a growing technique called Supercropping or HST, it involves carefully damaging the stems and is supposed to promote growth and THC production. I personally use it to fill all the gaps up when growing Sea-of-Green style and avoid wasting any space in tight grow spaces.

Why the purple?

We hear a lot of misinformation around what makes cannabis go purple and what this means. To clear up any misconceptions, it is caused by anthocyanins which are fairly common throughout the plant world. What are they? Well anthocyanins are water-soluble vacuolar pigments that, depending on their pH, may appear red, purple, blue or black. They are generally used protectively but can also be used for reproductive purposes when colouring up modified leaves in certain plants. So they are on no way an indication of the potency of cannabis.
