Govt declares anthrax emergency

Government has declared the anthrax outbreak as an emergency for control purposes pursuant to Section 63 (C) of the Animal Health Act.

According to Government Gazette Notice No. 1555 of 2023, control measures, which will be subject to review after vaccination of targeted animals in Eastern, Southern and Western provinces, have been enforced to help control the outbreak.

Minister of Fisheries and Livestock Makozo Chikote said the movement of live animals, animal products and animal by-products into, within and out of Southern Province, Western Province and Lumezi district in Eastern Province has been suspended with immediate effect to facilitate for vaccination and decontamination.

President Hakainde Hichilema says now is the time to work and leave politicking to 2026 when the country will hold the general election.

The President said this when he commissioned the new-look Kasama Airport, which he says will trigger development in the country’s northern circuit.

“Kasama mayor [Theresa Kolala], councillors, MPs, whether you are from PF or from another party, this time kubomba [is to work],” he said.

“Tubombele capamo [let’s work together]. Tukalanshanya pama politics mu 2026 [we’ll talk politics in 2026]. This time let’s work together to develop our lovely province.

“As you have heard, more airports will be done. All of this is to facilitate economic reconstruction.”
