Sidemount or backmount? The honest answer isn’t about which looks cooler — it’s about where each system takes you.

What matters most when choosing:
🔹 In-water balance. A manifolded twinset is inherently balanced — both cylinders share one gas supply. Sidemount while excellent at putting you in the right trim requires active gas management to maintain balance throughout the dive.
🔹 Progression from single-tank DIR. If you’ve trained in a single-tank DIR setup — backplate and wing, long hose, bungeed backup — backmount doubles scale up directly from what you already know. Hose routing, procedures, and muscle memory carry forward. The valve drill is the main new skill. Sidemount is a different system to learn from the ground up and will require you get some recreational dives to build muscle memory in before you can safely conduct tec dives.
🔹 Scalability to deeper dives. This is what most divers underestimate. As dives get deeper, you add additional stages like travel gas and deco cylinders. A backmount diver clips them along the body — the natural carrying real estate. A sidemount diver has already used that space for their back gas, with the back left unutilised. More than 4 cylinders on a sidemount diver introduces real complexity. Backmount simply scales better into deep trimix and multi-stage deco especially when diving beyond 65m
🔹 Team standardization. Backmount is configured consistently across the tec community. Sidemount setups vary diver to diver though organizations are bringing in this standardization to reduce inconsistencies
🔹 Specialized environments. Sidemount remains essential for tight passages where backmount cannot fit, & a practical choice for divers managing physical limitations like back problems.
🔹 Carrying & filling. A twinset is heavy — simpler on a boat, harder on shore. Sidemount cylinders are carried and filled one at a time.

The bottom line.
👉Choose Sidemount if your diving takes you into tight overhead environments overhead environments or if physical limitations like back issues.
👉Choose Backmount if you’re building towards deeper dives or team based diving where standardization matters.

Most people think scuba diving is a holiday activity. Then they get certified. And everything changes. 😳

Here’s why people who learn to dive (the right way!) rarely stop:

1. IT COMPLETELY SILENCES YOUR MIND 🧠
No notifications. No noise. No mental to-do list. Underwater, the only thing that exists is your breath and what’s in front of you. It’s the closest thing to a full reset that most people have ever felt.

2. YOU START SEEING OCEAN DIFFERENTLY- FOREVER 🪸
Not as a view from the beach. As a world. One that was always there, that you just didn’t have access to. Once you’ve been in it, you can’t unsee it.

3. IT BUILDS THE KIND OF CALM THAT YOU CARRY WITH TOU 😌
Diving teaches you to regulate your breathing under pressure. That skill doesn’t stay underwater. People notice it in how they handle stress, in how they slow down. It changes you quietly.

4. THE COMMUNITY IS UNLIKE ANYTHING ELSE 🩵
There’s something about sharing a dive that bonds people fast. It doesn’t matter where you’re from or what you do for work — underwater, none of that exists. Some of the best friendships we’ve seen at started on a boat.

5. THE OCEAN GIVES BACK MORE THAN YOUR EXPECT 🌊
Turtles. Rays. Whale sharks. Moments that genuinely stop you. You can’t plan them, you can’t fake them — and no camera ever does them justice. You just have to be there.

If you’ve been thinking about learning to dive, this is your sign. ✨
