The carved wooden bird sat quietly on the patio outside our home ,holding a modest scoop of seeds in its smooth coconut cup, but every time the wind caught it, the back porch vanished. In its place returned the warm salt breeze of Philipsburg, the rustle of palms along Great Bay, and the cobblestone charm of Old Street.
​During their trip, wandering away from the main stretch led them to Top Shop at #108 Old Street. It was one of those places where time slowed down. Shelves were lined with vibrant resortwear, soft cotton dresses, and colorful treasures, but it was this handcrafted bird feeder—with its dark polished wings, sweet carved beak, and the proud St. Martin & Maarten inscription—that stolen their hearts. It felt like holding a tiny piece of island soul.
​Now, thousands of miles away, the bird feeder hung outside their kitchen window. Local chickadees and cardinals quickly claimed it as their favorite spot, completely unaware that their new dining table originated on a sunny Caribbean island.
​For the home’s owners, watching the birds gather over morning coffee was more than just a peaceful routine—it was a daily ticket back to vacation. Leaving behind the gorgeous beach bags, vibrant apparel, and hand-sculpted souvenirs at Top Shop hadn't been easy, but this one little bird was doing a miraculous job keeping the spirit of St. Maarten alive and singing right at home.

The sun was setting over St. Maarten as seven-year-old Leo walked down the cobblestones of Philipsburg, clutching his newest favorite friend—a soft, green sea turtle wearing a tiny pirate hat.
