The era of CDs came, and it beguiled me momentarily. I sold my old vinyl collection and moved into the brave new world of CDs. Only, something was missing, something was just not the same. At the time I thought I’d fallen out of love with music, but now I know I was wrong - I had never been in love with CDs. From then on I have been on a mission to reconstruct the past, to rebuild the vinyl collection I had sold off, to rekindle the feeling of a teenager taking an LP out of it’s sleeve in his bedroom. I still get a thrill digging out the innovative bands of that time...the Human League, Soft Cell, Depeche Mode...
There is no way of getting around the fact that the world of vinyl came pretty close to meltdown. At the end of the Nineties and the beginning of the Noughties it seemed that the industry was on a life support machine. But it survived! Largely thanks to the underground dance movement and the DJs who orchestrated it, the vinyl adventure continued into a new millenium, and I went with it. I was thrilled the old format had reinvented itself and was a vehicle once more for the best in new, trail-blazing music. It was like being a teenager again....
Through it all there has been a single thread that has ultimately bound the passing decades together: Electronic. But not all of it. As the genre has diverged and dispersed in a myriad of new directions I have not discrimated in any regard save one. My only ask is that it has to have that certain energy and attitude I heard back in my Czechoslovak bedroom. If you ask me to define it, I can’t. Other than to say it’s a mood. The collection on this site is a distillation of that. Here is the true spirt of electronic! To complicate matters more, the spirit of electronic is not only communicated through electronic. It links up to other forms which you will find on this site. Ultimately it’s not about the instrument that’s being played, but the person that’s playing it. Sometimes it’s a synthesizer, sometimes a piano, sometimes a guitar. But always with that mood, that attitude. It’s a little shifty, a little left-field, a lot anti-establishment. It’s the small, quiet, persistent voice of a collective individualism. So, you see, Vinyl really IS In Me. It is part of who I am: part of my past, my present and my future. It’s my life’s passion.
