From first firing to second – this is part two of the pottery diaries where we show you how our pieces are made.
Once the kiln is unloaded after the first firing, the entire workshop gets ready for a big round of glazing. The glazes used in the Taizé pottery workshop are mixed from locally sourced minerals. Having used the same glazes for decades, many people now recognize Taizé ceramics simply by their colour. And yet, the craftspeople at Taizé still find new ways to combine glazes, playing with different combinations, patterns and designs to give each piece its own little twist.
After the hustle and bustle of mixing glazes and dunking the ceramics (some multiple times) it is time to load up the kiln a second time and fire the glazed ceramics.
