ARTISTS OF IMPERIAL PORCELAIN

Nelia Petrova is a painter on porcelain and sculptor, artist of the Imperial Porcelain Manufactory.

Since 1982 - member of the Union of Artists, 2010 - Honored Artist of the Russian Federation. In 1989-1991, 1998-2009 - the chief artist of the Imperial Porcelain Manufactory.

She is the author of numerous table sets, including ceremonial service "Peterhof" (2003) for the Grand throne room of the State Museum "Peterhof" and for the Throne Hall of the Catherine Palace State Museum "Tsarskoye Selo".

Winner of many awards, Nelia Petrova has participated in exhibitions since 1976, including the personal ones: "Porcelain of Nelia Petrova. Images of Russia. Imperial Porcelain Factory in Tsaritsyno ", the State Museum-Reserve Tsaritsyno; "Origins ", Gallery of Modern Porcelain Art.

The service Blue pattern

The artist’s fantasy takes us to the fabulous world of the winter forest. It seems that you can deeply inhale the frost air in the morning and feel the light touch of soft pine paws.

The painting is laconic: from the variety of colors Vera Bakastova selects only cobalt and gold. The author emphasizes the delicate shape of products, manifesting the nobleness of bone china, the natural whiteness of which in our eyes is transformed into sparkling snow.

HISTORY OF IMPERIAL PORCELAIN

1980s – summer Olympic Games in Moscow

According to the Soviet leadership, it had to show the world not only sporting achievements of the state, but also the advanced position in all other areas - economy,
culture and art.

In 1980, for the creation and organization of industrial production of thin bone china porcelain in the Soviet Union, a group of workers of the former Lomonosov Leningrad porcelain plant (now Imperial Porcelain Manufactory) was awarded the State Prize of the USSR in the field of science and technology.

The official short and restrained wording reflected the spirit of an era. However, the State Prize of the USSR awarded the worthiest. Those who performed tasks beyond national importance such as defense of the Soviet country, functioning of its life-support systems and improving the ideological basis.

Among the awardees were nuclear scientists, aircraft engineers, space explorers and artists, recognized not only at home but also abroad.

ARTISTS OF IMPERIAL PORCELAIN

Yulia Zhukova - the lead artist on porcelain painting, sculptor of the Imperial Porcelain Manufactory.

Since 1987 she participates in exhibitions. Since 1990 - Member of the Russian Artists' Union.

The works of Zhukova are regularly presented both in domestic and foreign exhibitions.

Her works are represented in collections of major museums in the country as well as in private collections.

Yulia Zhukova is a master of impeccable in style and precisely arranged graphic compositions, which can be easily adapted to production. The habit of self-restraint, strict professional discipline in selection of expressive techniques add to her works a special refinement.

FAMOUS OPERAS🎼

Romeo and Juliet is an opera in five acts by Charles Gounod to a French libretto by Jules Barbier and Michel Carré, based on The Tragedy of Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare.

It was first performed at the Théâtre Lyrique in Paris on 27 April 1867.
The opera is notable for the four love duet series and the waltz song "Je veux vivre".

The opening is distinguished by the choral prologue without instrumental accompaniment, with the original Shakespearean text, and the later sounding prothalamium for eight singers and a choir set in antique style.

Trompe l’oeil – «optical illussion»

This term refers to the illusory three-dimensional composition of porcelain or ceramics in the form of plates, dishes, trays or baskets of fruit, vegetables and other types of food.

Sometimes Trompe l’oeil repeats the size, shape and color of natural objects.

Services of a fruit still life are found in the lists of gifts to the court. In the collection of the State Museum Peterhof there is a miniature still life referred to the Nicholas I reign, and in the Hermitage there is a similar creamer with the Alexander II’s mark.

Such table decorations were usually set for dessert side by side with real fruits.

A repast animated when a basket of porcelain fruit still life turned into a tea set with entirely common objects: a cup looked like a rosy apple, teapot - a voluminous pumpkin, creamer – a pear, and under a heavy bunch of grapes there was actually a sugar bowl.

The service "Talisman"

Created by famous sculptor and ceramist, Eva Zeisel-Stricker (1906-2011).

In the early 1930s the artist worked at the Imperial Porcelain Manufactory (IPM), where she created the first form of the service "Intourist" for the mass production. In 1935, a young talented sculptor was appointed an artistic director of the industry. During repressions she left the country.

70 years later, Eva Zeisel-Stricker - a ceramist with a worldwide reputation, whose work largely determined the style of porcelain of many European and American firms - arrived from the USA to the IPM. As a result of this visit the "Talisman" has been created.

The service, deliberately devoid of any painting, attracts by its whiteness and fine contour line, emphasizing soft plastic shape of the products and reflecting the modern style of the author's design.

HISTORY OF IMPERIAL PORCELAIN

First Russian bone china

The initiator of work on the creation of bone china was Alexander Sokolov, the plant head from 1953 to 1974. With his innovative activity, he left a noticeable mark in the history of the plant: equipment modernization, mechanization of technological processes, introduction of semi-automatic production lines instead of manual machine tools, as well as of molding machines and of new decorating methods, and much more.

In 1966, he puts a very difficult task - to develop a special mass to create a bone china with the thickness of just 1 millimeter. Two years after the start of the experimental-creative work, the Imperial Porcelain laboratory came up with the first prototype of bone china.

New bone china workshop started to work in 1969, and the first batch of the product was obtained in May of that year. To mark this event, the first bone china cup, created by the honored artist of RSFSR Eduard Krimmer, was called "Mayskaya" (“of May”).

TECHINCAL ASPECTS OF PORCELAIN CRAFT

Today we’ll talk about the difference between porcelain and china. Although they are often used as synonyms, in fact they are not the same.

China refers to soft-paste porcelain and is naturally softer than porcelain.
The firing conditions make all the difference. Porcelain is fired under 1,454 degrees Celsius compared to 1,204 degrees Celsius for china.

As porcelain is a hard material, it has some medical and industrial applications, while china is limited to home ware and artistic use.

Another difference is translucency: porcelain is always translucent, china is opaque.

Inna Olevskaya - painter on porcelain, sculptor.

From 1973 - Member of the Union of Artists, 2006 - Honored Artist of the Russian Federation, 2011 - Corresponding Member of the Russian Academy of Arts, 1969 till now - artist of the Imperial Porcelain Manufactory.

Her works in different years were exhibited in the following museums: Museum of manufactory Herend in Hungary, National Art Museum of Lithuania, the Palazzo Medici Riccardi in Florence, the Hermitage State Museum, the State Museum "Tsarskoye Selo", the Central Museum of the Armed Forces, the Pushkin National Museum, the Central Exhibition Hall "Manege", Russian Ethnographic Museum, the Russian State Museum, the State Museum of Ceramics, the State Historical Museum, the Museum of arts and crafts in Zagorsk, the All-Russian Museum of Decorative-Applied and Folk Art, the State Museum "Tsaritsyno" and in many other galleries and private collections in Russia and abroad.

Many people face the problem of lack of understanding of terms related to the art of porcelain. Therefore, we begin a series of posts dedicated to terminology in porcelain production. Please welcome the PORCELAIN ALPHABET!

Pâte sur pâte - "weight per weight", "layer by layer".

This term denotes the technique of decorating porcelain by Schlicker paste (mixture of fine white clay, glycerin and water), diluted to a density of sour cream and implemented by a brush.

A porcelain master draws layer upon layer of decor on the surface, whose porous crock easily absorbs water from the schlicker before glazing, and the mass hardens, forming a relief. The product is then fired.

The height of the relief pattern can be varied by adjusting the amount of the schlicker, water and the deposited layers.

This technique was used in China in the XVIII century, and in the second half of the XIX century it was mastered in Europe at the Sevres Porcelain Manufactory.

At the Imperial Porcelain Manufactory this technique was first used in 1874 on products made for the wedding of Alexander II's daughter, Maria Alexandrovna.

FAMOUS OPERAS
Don Giovanni is an opera by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart in 2 acts, 10 scenes, with original libretto by Lorenzo da Ponte.

It is based on the play by Antonio de Zamora - the legends of Don Juan, a fictional libertine and seducer. The premiere took place in Prague, Czech Republic, in 1787. It is considered as opera buffa, a comic opera, although it blends comedy, melodrama and supernatural elements.

Nowadays it is a staple in operatic repertoire and one of the most played operas worldwide.

Anna Netrebko performed in this opera for the first time in 2002 as Donna Anna in Salzburg.
