August 9, 1980: Back in Black Gave AC/DC Their First UK No. 1 Album

On August 9, 1980, AC/DC's Back in Black climbed to the top of the UK Albums Chart, becoming the band's first No. 1 album in Britain.

The achievement came during an extraordinary new chapter for AC/DC. Brian Johnson had stepped into the enormous void left by Bon Scott, joining Angus Young, Malcolm Young, Cliff Williams, and Phil Rudd for an album packed with songs that would become rock standards.

Back in Black spent two weeks at No. 1 in Britain and ultimately became far more than a successful comeback. It grew into one of the most celebrated and commercially successful rock albums ever recorded.

August 9, 1985, Summer Rental hit theaters!

This hilarious 80s comedy starred the legendary John Candy as Jack Chester, an overworked air traffic controller who finally gets a five-week paid vacation and takes his family to the fictional Florida resort town of Citrus Cove.

Of course, this was the 80s… so there was no way this vacation was going to go smoothly!
🌴

From disastrous family adventures and vacation mishaps to an ongoing feud with an arrogant sailing champion, Jack's dream getaway quickly turns into one unforgettable summer.

Directed by Carl Reiner, Summer Rental also featured Richard Crenna, Rip Torn, Karen Austin, Kerri Green, Joey Lawrence, John Larroquette, Richard Herd, and more.

🏴‍☠️ Rip Torn was especially memorable as Richard Scully, the pirate-loving proprietor of a restaurant boat who eventually becomes one of Jack's friends.

Who remembers watching Summer Rental?

On this day in 1986, the Psychedelic Furs single “Pretty in Pink” debuted on the UK Singles Chart at #80 (August 9)

The title song of the 1986 Molly Ringwald, Andrew McCarthy and James Spader movie acted as a bit of inspiration for the classic John Hughes-penned and produced teen coming-of-age film, and was re-recorded specifically for the film's opening sequence in a version that was less raw than the original version that appeared on the 1981 album “Talk Talk Talk”.

It ended up being part of what was an excellent soundtrack album.

Lead singer Richard Butler said "Pretty in Pink" is actually about two women he knew while living in Muswell Hill in north London.
One was a friend of his ex-girlfriend, and the other went to a pub he frequented.

The 1986 version of the song got to #18 in the UK, narrowly missing the Top 40 on the US Billboard Hot 100, peaking at #41, and reaching #61 in Canada.

Following the massive success of The Final Countdown, the band returned with another collection of polished 80s rock packed with soaring vocals, big guitar riffs, and unforgettable melodies.

The album produced four singles released worldwide “Superstitious”, “Open Your Heart”, “Let the Good Times Rock”; and “More Than Meets the Eye”.

With Joey Tempest's powerful vocals and John Norum's replacement Kee Marcello bringing his own signature guitar style, Out of This World proved Europe was far from a one-hit wonder.

On this day in 1982, the Missing Persons single “Words” debuted on the Australian charts at #97 (August 9)

Singer Dale Bozzio co-founded LA new wave band Missing Persons in 1980 with former Frank Zappa musicians Warren Cuccurullo and Terry Bozzio (her husband from 1979 to 1986), and by the time of their debut studio album “Spring Session M”, the trio were joined by another former Zappa band member Patrick O'Hearn and keyboard player Chuck Wild.

Bozzio’s unique vocal quirks and interesting outfits ensured that Missing Persons singles featured quite regularly on the relatively new MTV.

“Spring Session M” was a commercial success, peaking at #17 on the Billboard 200, and the single “Words” peaked at #10 in Australia, and #42 on the Billboard Hot 100.
