A few highlights from the maps section of our current auction on Invaluable.com.

Lot 38: DJURBERG, Daniel: Karta över Polynesien (1797). An unusual Swedish map of Australasia. Djurberg’s eccentric use of the toponym ‘Ulimaroa' for Australia appears to have arisen from his misconstruing a Maori term cited in the journals from Cook's first voyage.

Lot 125: Scherer: Repraesentatio Geographica (1702). A curious world map on a north polar projection, showing the route of Magellan's circumnavigation.

Lot 45: Bowen: Complete Map of the Southern Continent (1744). The first dedicated English map of Australia.

Lot 132: Wonder Map of Melbourne (1934).

Lot 42: Zatta: Nuove Scoperte fatte nel 1765, 67 e 69 nel Mare del Sud (1776). A most attractive map of the eastern two-thirds of Australia, New Zealand and the Western Pacific, showing the tracks of the voyages of Cook, Byron, Carteret and Wallis.

Lot 148: Apollo 13 medallions and memorabilia.

Lot 140: A group of flown fragments from Apollo 11. They comprise salvaged fragments of the heatshield, Kapton foil and ablative plug of the Command Module 'Columbia'.

Timed Auction of Maps, Autographs, and Space Memorabilia. 31 August 2025

The broad selection of maps includes numerous early examples from the Pacific region and Australasia. Some stand-out items are Bowen’s Complete Map of the Southern Continent (1744) and Stanford’s Library Map of Australasia (circa 1862). The voyages of James Cook feature prominently, and other cartographers of note are Freycinet, Laurie & Whittle, Ortelius, and Zatta.

Notable autographs include Alexander Graham Bell, Sir Winston Churchill, Charles Dickens, Thomas Edison, Henry Ford, Nelson Mandela, and American Presidents Wilson, Kennedy, Johnson, Nixon … indeed, most of them all the way up to Trump.

The Apollo Program missions underpin the space memorabilia, with numerous signed covers by many of the astronauts made famous by the Moon landings, or in the case of Apollo 13, by NOT landing on the Moon. Space-flown items include a Robbins Medallion from the estate of Jack Swigert, pilot of the command module on the Apollo 13 mission, who uttered the often-misquoted words 'Okay, Houston ... we've had a problem'.

Our last catalogue for the year contains some rare and impressive presentation copies, including 'The Native Tribes of Central Australia', Spencer and Gillen’s first joint publication in 1899, ‘a landmark in anthropological history’. We have two other presentation sets from Spencer, and a signed letter. From General Sir John Monash, we have a presentation copy of 'The Australian Victories in France in 1918' (1920), offered together with a signed portrait photograph and typed letter. Our copy of John Betjeman's 'Collected Poems' (1958, first edition) contains a signed Christmas card with an unpublished poem in Betjeman’s hand.

Photography again features prominently: items include an album compiled by a South Australian participant en route to the aerial pageant at Essendon Aerodrome in May 1929; a complete set of 100 stereographs of India (plus part-sets on Jerusalem and Japan); and a stunning portrait by Charles Scott of a young Indigenous woman, Clara, near Oodnadatta in 1903-04.

Time on your hands, and resolving to read more this New Year? You can’t go past the Aubrey-Maturin novels of Patrick O’Brian, especially in the handsome Folio Society edition, complete in 20 volumes …

We close for a short break on Christmas Eve, reopening on Monday 6 January. Our new business hours will be Monday to Thursday, 10 am to 5.30 pm. Semi-retirement? Hardly! Fridays will be spent getting on top of the veritable mountain of valuable paper in the warehouse and multiple storage facilities. You have been warned: our catalogues and auctions will be more frequent, and more tempting!

As ever, many thanks for your support this year, and all the best for Christmas and the New Year.

Mick, Sue, Tom, Robert, David and Harry.

This manuscript recipe book, compiled by one Mrs Bathurst around 1817, is another unusual item in Monday's auction.

As well as the expected recipes for jellies, breads, puddings, cakes, pickles and fruit wines, there are also numerous remedies for everyday maladies.

One 'excellent medicine for infants' calls for coral powder, brandy and laudanum; a cure for a cough calls for '80 drops of o***m'; and the first ingredient in the recipe for Goulard Water is 'Two tea spoons full of extract of lead'. (Don't try these at home!)

Other recipes include household necessities such as a preparation 'for destroying bugs', tooth powder, boot black, and furniture polish.
