A few highlights from the maps section of our current auction on Invaluable.com.
Lot 38: DJURBERG, Daniel: Karta över Polynesien (1797). An unusual Swedish map of Australasia. Djurberg’s eccentric use of the toponym ‘Ulimaroa' for Australia appears to have arisen from his misconstruing a Maori term cited in the journals from Cook's first voyage.
Lot 125: Scherer: Repraesentatio Geographica (1702). A curious world map on a north polar projection, showing the route of Magellan's circumnavigation.
Lot 45: Bowen: Complete Map of the Southern Continent (1744). The first dedicated English map of Australia.
Lot 132: Wonder Map of Melbourne (1934).
Lot 42: Zatta: Nuove Scoperte fatte nel 1765, 67 e 69 nel Mare del Sud (1776). A most attractive map of the eastern two-thirds of Australia, New Zealand and the Western Pacific, showing the tracks of the voyages of Cook, Byron, Carteret and Wallis.
