What I love most about playing with Collectif: Arc en Ciel is that none of us ever knows exactly where we’ll end up.
Every performance feels a little like composing in front of an audience, except that we’re doing it together, in real time. We listen, respond, take risks, surprise one another and occasionally disappear into a kind of trance where time seems to stop.
From the inside, I sometimes wonder whether what we’re creating has any value at all. Then we arrive at the end, I emerge from whatever spell I’ve been under, hear the applause, and realise that the audience has travelled with us the whole way, taking in every little detail, every unexpected turn, every moment of silence and sound.
That’s one of the great joys of this project. The journey belongs to everyone in the room.
This Saturday, we’ll be transforming the Baroque Hall into something you’ve probably never experienced before. Freestyle music-making, improvisation and invention, all within one of Adelaide’s most beautiful spaces.
I’ll be joined by the amazing musicians - Celia Craig, Harrison Smith and Caspar Hawksley - for another evening where none of us quite knows what will happen - and that’s exactly what makes it fun.
