๐Ÿš—๐ŸŒต Big week ahead!

I'm hitting the road this week to pick up stock, visit , collect boxes and packaging, and tick off a very long to-do list.

Living remotely certainly has its challenges. The cost of freight to Agnes Water can be absolutely crazy! Sometimes the freight cost for boxes alone can be over $500. At that point, it often makes more sense for me to jump in the car, cover the fuel and accommodation, and collect everything myself.

The upside? I get to visit some exciting places, meet interesting people, and gather a few new ideas along the way.

To top it all off, I'll be finishing the week at the Australian Dragon Fruit Growers Association meeting. I always look forward to these gatherings.

Connecting with other growers, sharing experiences, and hearing from researchers working in the industry is incredibly inspiring.

There is always something new to learn, and it's great to see people working together to improve the future of dragon fruit in Australia.

Here's to a busy week with plenty of inspiration along the way! ๐ŸŒต๐Ÿˆ

๐Ÿ Paper Wasp Nest Alert! ๐Ÿ

One of the challenges of farming in the tropics is sharing the space with all sorts of wildlife โ€” including paper wasps.

We're happy to have wasps around the farm as they play an important role in the ecosystem by helping control caterpillars and other insects. However, when they decide to build their nests directly on our dragon fruit posts, it can quickly become a problem for us, our visitors, and anyone working around the plants.

As a pesticide-free farm, our preferred method of control is fairly simple. Mick suits up in his beekeeping gear and carefully removes the nest, usually by burning it at night when the wasps are settled. It might not be the most glamorous job on the farm, but it certainly helps reduce the number of painful stings!

Farming isn't always about growing fruit โ€” sometimes it's about negotiating with the locals too! ๐ŸŒต๐Ÿ‰

Have you ever had paper wasps build a nest somewhere inconvenient?

๐ŸŒณ Our First Jackfruit!! ๐ŸŒณ

Our 3-year-old tree has produced its very first jackfruit and we are honestly so excited!! ๐Ÿฅนโœจ

Even betterโ€ฆ this one is:
๐Ÿงก Deep orange flesh
๐Ÿงก Crunchy texture
๐Ÿงก Little to no latex
๐Ÿงก Super sweet and delicious

We canโ€™t wait to grow more of these incredible fruits and eventually share them with our community ๐Ÿˆ

Thereโ€™s something so rewarding about planting a tree years ago and finally tasting the results for the first time. Moments like this make all the hard work worth it ๐ŸŒฟ

Have you ever tried crunchy jackfruit before?

๐ŸŽ‹ Not all bamboo gets mulched! ๐ŸŽ‹

While a lot of our bamboo goes back through the mulcher to feed the soil, we also save some of the stronger canes to use as bamboo stakes around the farm ๐ŸŒฑ

Theyโ€™re perfect for:
๐ŸŒฟ Supporting young plants
๐ŸŒฟ Trellising vegetables
๐ŸŒฟ Garden structures
๐ŸŒฟ Propagation areas
๐ŸŒฟ Natural fencing and supports

We love finding ways to reuse materials already growing on the property rather than constantly buying new products. Simple, sustainable, and practical โ™ป๏ธ

Nothing wastedโ€ฆ just repurposed into another part of the growing system ๐ŸŒ

๐ŸŽ‹ Bamboo Mulch ๐ŸŽ‹

Nothing is wasted on our farm ๐ŸŒฟ

If it fits in the mulcher, it goes straight back into the food system.

Bamboo makes fantastic mulch โ€” helping retain moisture, protect soil biology, reduce weeds, and slowly return nutrients back into the ground as it breaks down. Everything becomes part of the cycle again.

We love finding ways to turn โ€œwasteโ€ into valuable resources on the farm rather than sending it to landfill.

โ™ป๏ธ Mulch feeds the soil
๐ŸŒฑ Healthy soil feeds the plants
๐Ÿ Healthy plants feed people, pollinators, and ecosystems

Simple systems can make a huge difference over time.

๐Ÿ”ฅ Getting Properties Fire Ready for the Dry Season ๐Ÿ”ฅ

As the dry season approaches here in Queensland, weโ€™ve started preparing around the property by reducing vegetation and removing leaf-dropping plants from around the house.

Creating a safer space around homes, sheds, and infrastructure can help reduce fuel loads and improve property safety during high fire risk periods.

Some things weโ€™re working on:
๐ŸŒฟ Clearing excess dry vegetation
๐ŸŒฟ Pruning overgrown plants
๐ŸŒฟ Removing leaf litter build-up
๐ŸŒฟ Trimming grass and weeds
๐ŸŒฟ Creating clear access around buildings
๐ŸŒฟ Moving flammable materials away from structures

Living rurally means staying proactive and prepared โ€” especially after good wet seasons that create heavy growth leading into dry conditions.

Stay safe everyone and donโ€™t leave preparations until the last minute ๐Ÿ”ฅ

Spotted at the@1770arts_ Show 2026 and we absolutely loved this creative little masterpiece! A beautiful handmade turtle inspired by dragon fruit colours and tropical vibes ๐ŸŒบ

Itโ€™s always so special seeing local artists and makers bringing the Discovery Coastโ€™s creativity to life through art, craft, and handmade pieces.

The detail, colours, and personality in this little turtle were incredible โ€” definitely one of our favourites from the show ๐Ÿ’•
