How beautiful is this hardcover of Shadow Reaper? đŸ¥° Full of relentless twists, enemies-to-lovers romance, found family, and high stakes action, Shadow Reaper is the start of a breathtaking new duology from international bestselling author Lynette Noni.

From the blurb:
NEVER BARGAIN WITH A REAPER.
The city of Aravell is in peril, plagued by a deadly blackmist that kills all it touches, and reapers who roam the streets, stealing magic from innocent children in their thirst for power. Seventeen-year-old Viridia Solace has trained for years to hunt these reapers but their ranks keep growing, led by the man who murdered her parents: the Reaper Priest.

When the Priest's most loyal follower, Reeve Ashton, is captured, he offers Viri a chance to avenge her parents...for a price. She knows better than to bargain with a reaper, let alone this reaper, but his offer is too good to resist.

Soon she's breaking him out of prison, colluding with his crew of magic thieves, and following him deep into the blackmist forest in search of an ancient legend, all so they can stop the Reaper Priest’s plot to doom the city. Viri is staking her life on Reeve's plan, but how can she trust a silver-tongued criminal to keep his word? And how can she trust her own heart when a buried secret could shatter everything?

An excellent day for fans of The Rolling Stones and Bob Spitz. Spitz's histories of The Beatles and Led Zeppelin are compelling and fascinating reading - not just for diehards!

From the blurb:

What left is there to say about the Stones?
A hell of a lot, it turns out ...
You think you know the story? Think again. Shorn of dulling layers of myth, an irresistible, clear-eyed portrait emerges of a band who, after sixty years, continue to break new ground.
At the heart of it all, the unique, fractious, alchemical bond between Mick and Keith, the Glimmer Twins. There’s been debauchery, decadence and death along the way. Not everyone survived the journey, but the band was always greater than the sum of its parts, laying down a trail of classic albums and landmark live performances in its wake.

Sunday Ponderings....
Over the past few months I have been battling a low-level addiction to sudoku. It began several months ago when I decided to train my brain in a numbers-based pursuit. As a word person I was quite chuffed when I got the hang of it!
As a result, I hadn't been doing as much reading as I could have - so I put sudoku aside and picked up my proof copies, so prepare for the following must-reads for your bedside pile:
Already out is 'The Calamity Club', Kathryn Stockett's novel set in Mississippi in the 1930s. This is a book of class distinction, family and secrets. I don't have a particular fondness for this part of the world or its history, but this is a mighty book and I absolutely loved it.
Coming this week is Maggie O'Farrell's 'Land'. Wow, what a read. Her gift with language is extraordinary, I could feel the earth humming as I read it. Full review coming.
Due out in August is Meg Mason's new novel 'Sophie, Standing There'. I am a big fan of Meg's work ('Sorrow and Bliss' was a favourite a couple of years ago) and was really looking forward to getting into this one. It did not disappoint! The main character, Sophie, is a freelance sound technician for literary festivals - surrounded by famous authors without ever being seen by them. It's witty and smart, and a poignant reflection on loneliness, told with pathos and humour. You will fall in love with Sophie when you get to it.
So yesterday as I slid my sudoku aside, I picked up Ann Patchett's 'Whistler'. What a year for great fiction!

The garden is in its scrappy-messy phase at the moment; the deciduous trees have had a final shakedown of autumnal glory, leaving a carpet of yellowy-brown leaves on the lawn and the garden beds merely a suggestion under it all.
Among the mess are moments of brilliance - a large camelia in the front garden is a riot of full-petalled pink blooms, even a lowly geranium has burst forth with a tiny, spiky pink flower. And the lemon tree is a grand, full-fruited thing of beauty against the shed.
It's cool out there, but the light and the stillness make me want to breathe it in and take notice.
'Let me rest,' says the garden.
