So, what actually is PLA?

PLA is probably the material you'll see most often in 3D printing, and it's one of the materials I use quite a lot at Cosmic Forge.

PLA stands for Polylactic Acid and is a type of bioplastic. It's generally made from renewable plant-based materials such as corn starch, sugarcane and other agricultural sources, which are processed into the plastic used to make the filament.

So what is PLA actually good for?

I find it works really well for things like:

• Decorative models and sculptures
• Figures and collectibles
• Prototypes
• Cosplay props
• Lithophanes
• Board game pieces
• Display pieces
• General household items
• Projects where heat resistance isn't a major concern

One of the biggest advantages of PLA is how easy it is to print. It produces good detail, has a huge range of colours and finishes available, and is generally a great choice when appearance is important.

The main downside is heat. PLA doesn't handle high temperatures particularly well, so something left inside a hot car can soften or deform over time.

That's why I don't just use PLA for everything. Depending on what a part needs to do, materials like PETG, ABS, ASA, TPU or PETG-CF can be a much better option.

The right material really depends on what you're making and how you're going to use it.

Still needs some post processing clean up though.
