HNT Gordon & Co. Crafting high quality hand planes and vices since 1995. Bench, joinery, special purpose planes and vices Regards,
Terry Gordon. Planemaker.

Australian family owned business since 1995 - dedicated to crafting quality woodworking hand planes at affordable prices. We make 50 different types of woodworking planes that are suitable for the beginner to the experienced woodworker. We also produce tail vices and caulking mallets (for boat builders), and stock the full range of Colen Clenton marking out tools. We have done considerable develo

pment work to learn how to harvest, dry and stabilise Australian hardwoods (in particular gidgee) to give us a superior quality wood for plane making that has ever been used before. In conjunction with this we have learnt how to combine this wood with brass using modern glues to enhance the function and life of some wooden planes. As a consequence of this work we offer an unconditional guarantee on workmanship and materials without hesitation. If you have any questions about our tools don't hesitate to contact us.

Every now and then the courier turns up with something that makes us stop what we're doing.

Today it was this handmade Harold & Saxon bevel edge chisel set.

We don't carry these as a regular stock item, and there's no waiting list. Trent makes them one at a time here in Australia, so when a set becomes available, it rarely hangs around for long.

Terry has been using Harold & Saxon chisels for years and still considers them the finest Western-style chisels he's ever used. That endorsement isn't handed out lightly.

We have one six-piece set available.

Fair warning... if you're just "having a look", your wallet may have other ideas. 😉

🇦🇺 Handmade in Australia. Built to earn their keep for generations.

Putting a rather colourful batch of plane blanks to bed for the weekend.

A few of these photos are a little darker because they were taken in the stabilisation room.

Some will become planes for the Handworks show in the USA, although the bench is certainly not reserved for show stock.

Sleep well, little planes. There’s work to be done next week.

Terry is heading to Handworks 2026!

We’re delighted to be joined by Leslie at Heartwood Tools for Handworks in Amana, Iowa, on 4 and 5 September.

Time is short and luggage space is even shorter, but if there is a particular HNT Gordon tool you’d love Terry to bring along, please contact Leslie at Heartwood Tools and place your request.

We can’t make any promises, as Terry may need to leave room for a clean shirt, but we’re keen to do what we can!

We’re looking forward to catching up with old friends, meeting plenty of new ones and enjoying two very full days of hand tools, wood shavings and good company.

Well, that moved quickly!

Only a few hours after announcing our October plane-making courses, the Daylesford Block Plane class is already fully booked.

There are still a limited number of workbench places available for the remaining Block and Shoulder Plane courses in Daylesford and Queanbeyan.

Hosted by Phoebe Everill and Evan Dunstone, each small-group course includes an HNT Gordon plane kit and step-by-step tuition with Terry Gordon and the HNT team. You’ll fit, assemble and tune your own plane, then take the finished tool home.

With only six students in each class, places really are limited. No artificial countdown clocks here. We simply ran out of benches.

The new Thomas Lane 7:1 dovetail markers have arrived.

After the release of the 6:1 version, a few sharp-eyed woodworkers asked whether a 7:1 marker might follow. Thomas has answered properly, with brass, steel and a selection of specialty wooden inlays.

Accurate, practical, and just fancy enough to make your marking knife feel underdressed.

Fresh off the CNC and already showing off.

This beautiful batch of Palm Smoothing Planes is a great reminder that when you make the most of every piece of timber, the timber often takes your breath away.

Beautiful figure, plenty of colour and more personality than some people we’ve met.

Damion Fauser putting our HNT Gordon Pattern Maker’s Vice through its paces on one of his beautiful new benches.

We love Damion’s work and this bench is no exception. Clean, considered and built for serious use. The Pattern Maker’s Vice adds a huge amount of flexibility, allowing work to be held securely at different angles for shaping, planing, carving and all those slightly awkward jobs that make a normal vice feel a bit underdressed.

We can’t wait to see what its newest owner creates with this beautiful bit of gear.

Thanks for letting us share, Damion.

No amount of rain or auto-focus delay could wipe the smile from Terry’s face, or from his voice.

Last week, Terry collected this incredible 5 metre long striped ebony board from Theo at Agora Timbers in Brisbane.

This board has quite a story.

It came from a mature ebony tree, which has since been replaced with 1,500 juvenile ebony plants. Those young trees are now doing their work in nature, growing strongly and actively storing carbon.

The timber from this mature tree will now be transformed into high-quality hand tools designed to last for generations. Dense timber means dense carbon storage, and when that timber becomes a tool built to last for decades, or even centuries, it continues to hold that story in a very practical way.

The commercial harvest also supports much-needed services in a truly remote village, creating value for the community, the supplier, the maker and the end user.

For us, this is a beautiful example of timber being used with care, purpose and respect. A rare material, responsibly sourced, and destined to become tools that bring joy to woodworkers for a very long time.

Ebony supplied by Agora Timbers.
Tools to be made by HNT Gordon & Co.

Terry opening up rare African Blackwood in the HNT Gordon workshop.

This stage is all judgement. Every cut has to balance grain direction, yield, figure, function and safety while working around faults and making the most of an extremely valuable log.

It may look simple, but it definitely isn’t.

This timber is already destined for a complete plane set, but a few specialty planes may emerge from the process.

Collectors, keep an eye out.
