RECYCLING IS NOT THE SOLUTION…

Now admittedly, that is a controversial statement. However, if you really think about it, recycling only goes so far in solving our waste problem.

Take a basket of dirty laundry for instance. You can take dirty clothes out of the basket, deodorise them and then wear them over and over again, pretending they are clean. However, it doesn’t fully hide the fact that the clothes are still dirty, and will remain dirty until they are washed.

Plastic can be viewed in the same way. No matter how many times you recycle it, it is still plastic. Plastic that, when discarded, will continue to contaminate our lands and oceans.

Did you know, a single bamboo shoot can be harvested over and over again? 🧐

Once bamboo reaches maturity, it can be harvested multiple times. Meaning, the soil ecology is not disturbed and the land mass required is significantly reduced 🌱

Considering that virgin forests are usually cleared to make room for other crops such as cotton, the growth and harvesting process of bamboo is extremely important when you think sustainability β™»

πŸ’πŸŽ‰Our little turtle friend, Udon, has finally been released after a long 5 months of rehabilitation and recovery πŸŽ‰πŸ’.

For those who don’t know, Udon was first found by Australian Seabird & Turtle Rescue Inc (ASTR) at Hastings Point NSW, late October 2021, in a very weak and frail condition. He was covered in barnacles and had an obvious skin condition.

Since beginning our Elimin8 journey, we have committed ourselves to helping the environment and playing our part as active eco citizens, by providing assistance in environmental and wildlife research. These various research charities work towards either; rehabilitating sick sea creatures, finding treatment solutions for the Great Barrier Reef, or conducting sea turtles and marine debris work.

We first began our sponsorship program with ASTR in December 2021, before we officially launched our Elimin8 company. We have been so honoured to have sponsored Udon’s rehabilitation and are proud to see him come such a long way with his recovery. We are so excited to see him finally being released back into the ocean where he truly belongs 🌊.

We wish the best for Udon and hope he stays safe and healthy for the rest of his turtle years.

As more sea creatures, like Udon, fall victim to plastic pollution and other issues encountered in the oceans and on the beaches, we are prepared to contribute more, in order to help save the lives of our turtles, seabirds and any other sea creatures in need πŸ’™.

πŸŽ‹ Did you know that bamboo is the fastest growing plant on the planet! πŸŽ‹

Not only does bamboo grow at a phenomenal rate (up to 1.2 meters/ day), reaching maturity in just 3-4 months, it also grows in most soil types including clay or sand.

That means that bamboo can be grown in areas that other crops cannot πŸ‘€

When you think about eco solutions, what's the first thing you think of?

πŸƒ For us, it's environmentally friendly AND sustainable changes πŸƒ.

When shopping for everyday household products, there is more to consider than just it's biodegradability and composability rate.

🧐 You should also look at the materials each product is made of, and consider the growing and processing stages of these materials.

For example, you may choose a product that is made of cotton and think it's great, because cotton is a natural and biodegradable material... however, the growth and processing of cotton is quite unsustainable.

Here are some reasons why:
❌ cotton requires huge amounts of arable land to grow on. This results in the destruction of many habitats.
❌ cotton is very susceptible to insect infestations, meaning it requires a lot of insecticides, herbicides and many other harmful chemicals to assist it with it's growth.
❌ for every 1kg of cotton that is produced, 10 000 liters of water is used...

😡 That's a mind blowing amount of water usage!

πŸƒ So, please make your environmentally friendly and sustainable changes today πŸƒ.

Our thoughts and hearts go out to all of those who have been impacted by these devastating floods. Just a update on the turtle hospital in Ballina following the floods that have occurred in Northern NSW. The Australian Seabird and Turtle Rescue Inc in Ballina mostly remained untouched, including the turtle hospital.

Udon, the Green Turtle Elimin8 has been sponsoring since September 2021 has been relocated to the sea turtle hospital at Sea World on the Gold Coast for the remainder of his rehabilitation. We are uncertain at this stage what this will mean for the release of Udon, was it was meant to be later this month, however we will update you when we have more information.

In the meantime Australian Seabird and Turtle Rescue Inc’s bird aviaries have been devastated by the floods so feel free to donate to the rebuild here:-

A staggering 3.75 million disposable nappies are used each day in Australia and New Zealand, and it takes about one cup of crude oil to make each nappy. This is a lot of landfills, with conventional disposable nappies estimated to take up to 150 years to break down. (Sustainability Victoria Jan 22).

So, is there a good alternative? YES
Compostable eco-friendly nappies and wipes made from plant-based materials are more sustainable and nourish the earth as they breakdown. Admittedly, they are not perfect - they still contain small amounts of plastic (think tabs and elastic), but they go a long way to solving the problem.
