Solange Komenda is a German-French recorder player, teacher, and musicologist. A graduate of the Music University Karlsruhe and the Conservatorium van Amsterdam, she holds multiple degrees in recorder performance and contemporary music. She has been a finalist at the International Recorder Competition Tel Aviv (2019) and won first prize at the Tre Fontane competition in Trossingen (2021). An active performer, she is a member of Quartet Revoiced, the Stuttgart recorder orchestra Unblocked, and the trio Timeless Express, among other ensembles.
Currently undertaking a doctoral thesis exploring connections between the shakuhachi and the recorder within Japanese contemporary repertoire, Solange is deeply engaged in the musical intersections of culture, performance, and research.
In reflecting on Shadow Dancer, Solange shared:
“Shadow can’t exist without light. I found the two opposites living in a symbiosis fascinating, both in the music and as I filmed the video. The composition allowed me to put my ideas and thoughts into my interpretation and video-making. Zana Clarke’s beautiful work gave me so much inspiration.”
Congratulations, Solange, on this outstanding achievement. We extend our sincere thanks to the Sydney Recorder Orchestra and Lynden Gallagher for their generous sponsorship, which helps make such recognition possible.
