Winner Announcement – Orpheus Music Virtual Recorder Competition

We are thrilled to announce the Open Section 1st Prize winner of this year’s competition:

Solange Komenda (Germany) – Shadow Dancer by Zana Clarke
*1st Prize – AUD $1,300* | Sponsored by the Sydney Recorder Orchestra and Lynden Gallagher
You can view her performance here:
https://youtu.be/xeJyCXKJw3U

Solange Komenda is a German-French recorder player, teacher, and musicologist. A graduate of the Music University Karlsruhe and the Conservatorium van Amsterdam, she holds multiple degrees in recorder performance and contemporary music. She has been a finalist at the International Recorder Competition Tel Aviv (2019) and won first prize at the Tre Fontane competition in Trossingen (2021). An active performer, she is a member of Quartet Revoiced, the Stuttgart recorder orchestra Unblocked, and the trio Timeless Express, among other ensembles.

Currently undertaking a doctoral thesis exploring connections between the shakuhachi and the recorder within Japanese contemporary repertoire, Solange is deeply engaged in the musical intersections of culture, performance, and research.

In reflecting on Shadow Dancer, Solange shared:

“Shadow can’t exist without light. I found the two opposites living in a symbiosis fascinating, both in the music and as I filmed the video. The composition allowed me to put my ideas and thoughts into my interpretation and video-making. Zana Clarke’s beautiful work gave me so much inspiration.”

Congratulations, Solange, on this outstanding achievement. We extend our sincere thanks to the Sydney Recorder Orchestra and Lynden Gallagher for their generous sponsorship, which helps make such recognition possible.

We are thrilled to announce a 2nd Prize winner in this year’s Open Section in the Orpheus Music Virtual Competition:

DAAG! (SA) – Three movements from Lance Eccles’ ‘Nordic Suite’
*2nd Prize – AUD $700* | Sponsored by the Canberra Recorder and Early Music Society and Lynden Gallagher

Watch their video:

Formed in 2023, DAAG! (Donna Hughes Barton, Annette Lever, Annette Salt, Garth Rowe) is known for their energetic and theatrical performances, fuelled by a love of collaboration, great music - and good food. The name “DAAG!” comes from their first initials and is also a friendly Dutch greeting.

The ensemble shared:
“We thank Orpheus for the opportunity to participate in this competition. This was our first experience making a video. The idea of linking the pieces through a narrative was agreed on by all of us. The script and images were created by the Annettes and narrated by Judith Barr. Ray Thomas, videographer, produced the final submission within 72 hours. The performance was recorded in Studio 8, Joslin, with thanks to Graham Norton.”

Congratulations again to DAAG! and many thanks to the Canberra Recorder and Early Music Society and Lynden Gallagher their help in sponsoring this prize.
