When builder Craig Hamm finished his Avoca OC1 Outrigger Canoe after six weeks of leisurely shop time, he didn't just take it for a quiet inaugural paddle. He packed 80 lbs of expedition gear—including a carefully bubble-wrapped bottle of 15-year scotch—and headed straight into the wilderness of Shoshone Lake.

From surviving crosswinds to outperforming traditional 17-foot sea kayaks in both stability and gear loading, Craig put Aaron’s stitch-and-glue design through the ultimate trial by fire.

The Avoca Outrigger backcountry camping to Shoshone Lake Yellowstone!

Glueing (gluing) the 4mm plywood first deck onto the 12.5ft long v-bottom wooden paddle board from Vintage Board Co. I use polyurethane glue as it’s watertight and expands slightly to fill any voids. I’ll be taking this sup along with my 1963 Series 2a Land Rover on a camping mission to Moreton Island. Stay tuned. Plans for sale at www.vintageboardco.com.au.

The Avoca Double Outrigger. I asked AI to mock up a double outrigger version of our Avoca Outrigger design and this is what it came up with! Looks pretty epic! Adding a second outrigger is easy by building two outriggers and doubling the length of the cross arms. I might have to update my own Avoca Outrigger to this configuration. It is incredibly tempting, midway through a build, to think: "Maybe I should add an extra layer of fiberglass here," or "I’ll add some extra bracing inside just to be safe."
