Spring in the bush. Everything's moving again.

New growth is through, the creeks are still running, and country you've walked all winter will read differently now.

A few things worth thinking about:

Wind. Warmer days build thermals that swirl through the gullies by afternoon. Early and late are your friends.

Feed. Fresh growth on old burns, creek flats, the edges of clearings. Find the feed and you've narrowed the country right down.

Your zero. If the rifle's been in the cabinet since July, confirm it before you go.

Sambar stalking runs year round and the hound season is open through to the end of November. Check the current GMA seasons and the rules for the country you're hunting — public land classifications aren't all the same.

Season's open. Not every rule opened with it.

A week in and the rivers are busy again — which is exactly when it's worth a two-minute check before you head out.

The opening applies to rivers and streams. But it's not a blanket "everything's on" situation:

Some waters carry their own specific rules, separate from the general regulations
A few sections stay closed to all hook and line fishing, regardless of what you're targeting
Bag and size limits still apply, and they're not the same everywhere
Lakes and impoundments run on different rules again

None of it's complicated. It's just worth knowing which set applies to the water you're standing in.

Light rod, cold water, clear head. That's most of trout fishing sorted.

The rest is gear that doesn't let you down at 6am in September.

A few things worth getting right early in the season:

Polarised lenses. The single biggest upgrade most people never make. You'll read the water properly and see fish you'd have walked past.

Layers that breathe. You'll be cold walking in and warm walking out. One heavy jacket doesn't solve that.

Something small and natural. Early-season water is still cold and clear. Subtle beats loud.

Boots you can stand in for four hours. Wet feet end trips.

Hope you all got a good one yesterday.

Half the people who walk through our door learned this stuff from their old man, or their grandad, or someone else's dad who took them along because they asked enough times. It's how the whole thing gets passed down.

The rivers are open again.

Three months closed, and as of this morning you can fish for trout in Victoria's rivers and streams. First light, cold water, and a season's worth of fish that haven't seen a lure since June.

If you're heading out today, a few things worth having sorted:

Licence current and on you
Polarised sunnies — you'll spot twice as much
Layers, because the mornings are still winter
Something small and natural for water that's still running cold

The high country streams and the upper reaches are where most people will be. Check the regs for the water you're fishing before you go — a few sections carry their own rules, and they're worth knowing.
