☕️ BOOK NOOK CAFÉ CLOSING — FRIDAY 18TH SEPTEMBER

After 12 wonderful years, our Book Nook Café will be closing on Friday 18th September. ❤️

Sadly, rising costs mean the café is no longer financially viable. We are incredibly grateful to all our wonderful customers who have supported us, shared a coffee and enjoyed many happy moments with us over the years.

But the good news is… the BOOKSHOP IS THRIVING! 📚🎉

We’re continuing to focus on what we love — books, books and more books!

We have a new self-serve coffee machine (with our original coffee beans), cold drinks in the fridge and biscuits available weekdays from 9am–5pm, and you’re always welcome to grab a drink, find a comfy spot and relax in the bookshop with a good book. ☕️📖❤️

Our community space will also continue to be available for local groups, meetings and community activities.

And don’t worry, our weekly Friday Storytime sessions with Karyn will continue! 📚🐛❤️ We’ll still be gathering together for stories, activities and plenty of bookish fun.

We just heard the sad news about the passing of our beloved customer, Bridie Christie, who was 96 years old. Bridie was a passionate supporter of children's books and would often call in to the shop for her Chai and lunch and enjoyed browsing the latest children's books. She particularly loved 'If I Was a Horse' by Sophie Blackall. Bridie was always so impressed with the quality of the books available for today's children, remarking how marvellous the content and illustrations were, compared to books when she was a wee young lass in Scotland.

During one visit, she shared a story about when she was a young girl. One of her favourite things to do was visiting her local library, much to her mother's annoyance, as she spent far too much time there. However, upon entering the library, she always had to present her hands, both sides to the librarian for inspection. The librarian would check her hands to make sure they were clean, so the books didn't get marked. She was also warned to be quiet! Shhhh!

RIP Bridie. I was blessed to know you and i hope you are surrounded with your favourite books.

💙 Father’s Day Storytime! 💙

We celebrated all things Dad and Grandad at Storytime today! 📚 Karyn read some very funny stories, including the 15th anniversary edition of Nick Bland’s Some Dads, Baby’s First Father’s Day by Cheryl Orsini and, of course, Bluey’s Daddy Putdown! 🧔📖

The children then got creative making colourful decorated ties for their special person. 👔🎨

And for morning tea? 🍊 Juicy oranges straight from Charlotte’s tree! 🌳

What a lovely Father’s Day celebration! 💙

Next Friday at 10am it's 'Sing-A-Long with Karyn' as we use our musical instruments and sing nursey rhymes.

Schoolworks Supplies is delighted to announce we are a recipient of the ABA Bookseller Events Grant!

We are one of 26 bookshops across Australia that will receive funding to bring our events program to life. The program is designed to support the creation of events that otherwise wouldn’t be possible, allowing us to connect literary communities and encourage new and underserved audiences into our bookshop.

We’ve begun planning the 'Big Bairnsdale Book Bazaar', which will take place on Love Your Bookshop Day which is Saturday 10 October from 10am to 2pm. The Big Bairnsdale Book Bazaar is a community event featuring all genres of local authors and illustrators, author talks, workshops, lots of bookish things, music and yummy food vans, (Playful Paws Puppachino’s and Slinky Spuds.) Our event is also being supported by the The Children's Book Council of Australia (CBCA).

We are excited to announce, best-selling and award winning children's author Andrea Rowe Writer will be attending and hosting two workshops. Andrea wrote 'Jetting Jumping' which won the 2022 The Children's Book Council of Australia's picture book of the year. Local children's illustrator James Hart, who has illustrated books for Anh Do and George Ivanoff will also be joining us!

We can’t wait to share updates with you. More details to come soon!

What a great way to finish the week with dress up at storytime for Book Week!

Linda was a beautiful butterfly 🦋and Karyn Walden Blythman was Dame Wash-a-Lot. We had a gorgeous blue princess 👸🏻💙and two amazing caterpillars 🐛. Everyone got a free The Children's Book Council of Australia bookmark and we read books from the shortlist this year. Morning tea was a delicious cream sponge cake 🎂and we did some colouring for our art activity.

Great to see the children enjoying the books!📚 📖

Next week it is our special Father's Day storytime event. BYO Dad, Grandad or special person along :) as we read some funny Father's Day books.
